On this day in 1992, The Last of the Mohicans was released in theaters around the world. The movie, which was based on the 1826 classic novel by James Fenimore Cooper, quickly rose to greatness and became one of the most memorable films of all time.

The Last of the Mohicans was set in 1757 during the French and Indian war. During a battle, the daughters of a British Colonel are kidnapped, and he sends three trappers from the dying Mohican tribe to rescue them. The trappers, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, Eric Shewing, and Russell Means, find themselves caught in the middle of the gruesome war that they never wanted to join in the first place.

Day-Lewis, a three-time Oscar winner, played an adopted member of the tribe. And he was drawn to the movie because of his character’s disregard for modern civilization.

“I liked the idea of a man who had not been touched by 20th-century neurosis,” he said in a 2003 interview. “A life that isn’t drawn inwards.”

The film grossed $75,505,856 in the box office and its first two weeks as the number one movie in America. And The Last of the Mohicans brought home one Oscar for Best Sound.

‘1883’ Executive Producer Compares The Show to ‘Last of the Mohicans’

1883 executive producer David Glasser thinks his new Yellowstone prequel will become as iconic as some of Hollywood’s most memorable films. Some of the titles Glasser mentioned were Lonesome Dove, Last of the Mohicans, and Dances with Wolves.

Glasser told Deadline that the series slated to release in December “has the ambitious spirit of [those] past period frontier classics.” Each of the mentioned films is highly decorated. And Dances With Wolves is among the most acclaimed movies in history. It won seven Academy Awards-including Best Picture. And it is listed on IMDb’s top 100 movies of all time. Dances with Wolves also starred Kevin Costner. And if you follow Yellowstone, you know he plays the lead role in that series. And Costner also took home one of the seven Oscar for Best Actor in Dances with Wolves.

So comparing 1883 to such films sets some pretty high expectations. But if the series is even half as good as Yellowstone, we know it will be worth watching.

The upcoming Yellowstone spin-off will follow the Dutton family as they travel to Montana and build one largest cattle ranches in the country. The same ranch that Costner’s John Dutton runs in the present day. The show will be glittering with some of Hollywood and Nashville’s biggest stars. Country singers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are playing the lead roles of James and Margaret Dutton. Sam Elliott, a veteran in the Western genre, will star alongside the couple. And Billy Bob Thornton, another Oscar winner, is also staring in the series.
