“The Voice” coaches have even more difficult decisions ahead of them as they narrow down their teams during the Battle Rounds. But not all the fans agree with the choices the coaches make in who stays and who goes.
Tomorrow, Oct. 18, the Battle Rounds resume with more intense match-ups. But one of last week’s Battles easily swept the competition and provided an impossible choice for coach John Legend.
KJ Jennings and Samuel Harness battled it out in a gorgeous rendition of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s duet “I Know What You Did Last Summer” from 2015. Both contestants threw themselves into the performance, creating amazing chemistry and connection between them even as they battled for the same spot.
After the performance, the coaches split on who they supported. Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton praised Jennings’ “cool runs” and “range.” But Clarkson appreciated Harness’s “rock edge” and wants to see where he’ll go. Shelton admits that both performers had “strengths” but “Samuel has that cool smoky sound” like he just smoked some cigarettes. Based on Harness’s “tone,” Shelton voted in favor of him.
“The Voice” coach Ariana Grande, on the other hand, appreciated seeing a new side to Jennings. She called Harnesses’ blind auditions “one of my favorites” and applauded his tone and voice. But she told Jennings, “I don’t know that I was able to fully appreciate, based on your blind auditions, what I just saw now come to life.”
This left Legend with an impossible decision and one fans weren’t all too happy with.
‘The Voice’ Coaches Receive Backlash From Fans For Not Stealing This Contestant
Legend ended up choosing Harness because “his voice has a little more character and individuality and uniqueness” to it. Even though he appreciated Jennings’ “vocal techniques” and “great energy,” the emotion and tone of Harness’s voice drew Legend to his side.
Fans can’t fault Legend for that. While watching the performance, there’s no doubt that both contestants are absolutely gifted. But the real surprise came when no other coaches swooped in to steal Jennings to their team.
According to Good Housekeeping, fans were shocked and livid that the other coaches just let Jennings walk away. Every coach gets one steal during the Battle Rounds, but no one used it to save Jennings.
“So she is going home? But she was literally AMAZING? Why didn’t anyone steal her? She’s phenomenal and looked like a star,” one fan commented on the official “The Voice” YouTube video of the performance.
“I like Samuel, he has a nice tone, but I would have chosen KJ. How did she not get stolen???” another person wrote.
“The Judges need their butt kicked for not keeping KJ. She was so much more than they gave her credit for,” a different fan said.
Per Good Housekeeping, Blake Shelton said in an off-camera interview, “Samuel versus KJ was a good battle, but I like to wait to use my steal because there’s always a battle that happens towards the end of these things that blows people away.”
Guess we’ll have to wait and find out who he ends up using it for, and whether they’re worth it!
