A new theory suggests that critically-acclaimed series Sons of Anarchy and The Sopranos share an unlikely connection.

Both shows starred actress Drea De Matteo in significant supporting roles, leading one Reddit user to a conclusion: that the two characters are one and the same. While the clues are flimsy, it’s an intriguing concept.

In Sons of Anarchy, De Matteo played Wendy, the first wife of protagonist Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam. In the first season of the show, Wendy is pregnant. Unfortunately, the character’s drug problem leads to their son being born with birth defects. At the end of the first season, Wendy goes to rehab and is not seen again until season four.

In The Sopranos, the actress played Adriana, the girlfriend of Christopher Moltisanti. Her character was well-received. De Matteo even received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Unfortunately, her character meets an untimely end when her drug problem and shady nightclub dealings are leveraged against her by the FBI. Adriana becomes an informant but eventually comes clean to Christopher.

While she tries to convince him to go into the Witness Protection Program with her, Christopher’s loyalties remain with Tony Soprano. He reports her to his boss, whose right-hand man, Silvio, takes care of her. Adriana gets into Silvio’s car under the pretense of visiting Christopher in the hospital. While Adriana catches on and tries to escape, Silvio drags her into the woods and shoots her offscreen.

Because her death occurred offscreen, fans often speculate whether she survived. Granted, Adriana never returned to The Sopranos, and the fallout of her death was explored on the show.

Sons of Anarchy Meet Tony Soprano

Even so, this theory centers around the idea that Adriana survived the attack. The clues cited by the theory’s creator include De Matteo’s thick New Jersey accent and the fact that both characters struggle with addiction. The connection is loose at best, but it’s still an interesting idea.

Perhaps the biggest piece of evidence both for and against the theory is that Sons of Anarchy referenced The Sopranos. Moreover, the former series didn’t just mention the latter; it mentioned Adriana by name. In one scene, Jax takes a coworker to a warehouse where they intend to start a business and she looks uneasy. He then quips, “you thought I brought you here to Adriana you?”

As a result, it is likely that The Sopranos is fictional in the world of Sons of Anarchy. The creator of the theory connecting the two shows suggests that this is not a reference to The Sopranos but to Wendy’s past. Jax is only referencing his ex-wife’s actual backstory.

Into the De Matteo-Verse

No solid evidence exists to confirm whether or not Wendy is in fact Adriana in disguise. If a similar basis of being on the run connects the two characters, then De Matteo’s other starring role could be roped into the theory. In 2009, De Matteo joined the sixth season cast of Desperate Housewives. Her character, Angie Bolen, is a woman on the run from her past alongside her husband and son.

She also has a thick New Jersey accent—perhaps just how De Matteo talks—and a complicated past. Could Angie also be Adriana? No, actually. The character’s backstory reveals itself over the course of the season. While arguments could be made to the contrary, Angie, Wendy, and Adriana are all separate characters played by one talented actress.

Even so, it is “fun” to imagine a shared universe between The Sopranos and Sons of Anarchy. Part of what is great about fan theories is that they let audiences enjoy shows in their own ways.
