Contestants on Jeopardy! are known for their lightning-fast response times and seemingly endless wells of knowledge on a wide variety of topics. Every now and then, however, a question stumps even the most prolific players. This rare occurrence happened on Tuesday’s episode of Jeopardy!, but rather than commiserating with the contestants’ failure, fans were furious.
It started when new champ Ryan Long chose the final clue in the Sports Shorts category for $1000. An image of Nathan Chen, the beloved Olympic figure skater hailed as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2022, appeared on the screen. Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik then gave the three contestants the clue: “He took gold with a powerhouse free skate at the 2022 Winter Olympics.”
Contestants Ryan, Eric, and Bonnie all stared blankly at the image, none of them appearing to recognize Chen in the slightest. As the buzzer sounded, Bialik revealed the answer with obvious surprise she had to do so. “That is Nathan Chen,” she said. “An absolutely unbelievable athlete.”
Passionate Jeopardy! fans weren’t quite as kind as Bialik in their response to the missed question. “Absolutely disgusted that none of the jeopardy contestants knew who Nathan Chen is,” one wrote. “Nathan Chen was the answer on jeopardy and no one knew the answer. How dare they?” another said.

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Praise Contestant Ryan Long
When Mattea Roach’s incredible 23-win streak on Jeopardy! came to an end, fans assumed it would be a while before they had another champ to celebrate. Just a few short weeks later, however, Ryan Long stepped behind the contestant’s podium and immediately captured fans’ admiration with his quiet charm and fearless strategy.
The new champ now has an impressive 11 wins to his name, as well as over $100,000 in winnings. Though fans say he’s the complete opposite of previous super champ Mattea Roach, they absolutely adore Ryan Long, and many have taken to social media to say so.
“Rideshare driver and cat fosterer Ryan Long is quietly cleaning up on Jeopardy and so there is good news in the world,” one fan wrote of the contestant. “Ryan Long is the coolest Jeopardy contestant I’ve ever seen,” another said.

If anyone is enjoying Ryan Long’s winning streak more than Jeopardy! fans, it’s Ryan Long himself. To the lovable new champ, being on Jeopardy! is nothing short of a dream come true.
“It’s been really surreal,” Long, a Pennsylvania native, explained to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “It didn’t feel real until I saw myself on television, and I was like, ‘Okay, so this is a thing that happened and it wasn’t a fever dream.'”
