In a video shared to the series’ Twitter account, Walker actor Mitch Pileggi reflects on his top moments from filming the first season.
“The thing I liked most about season one was getting to work with Molly Hagan, who plays my wife, Abilene,” reveals Pileggi. His role in the series is the father of the title character, Bonham Walker. Played by Supernatural star Jared Padalecki, Walker is a Texas Ranger who returns to his family after a year-long undercover assignment.
The CW’s Walker is a reboot of the long-running series, Walker, Texas Ranger. Like the reboot, the original series was set in Texas. However, it had less of a family focus. Instead of its cast being rounded out by Walker’s family members, the original series focused on Walker’s professional life.
In addition to Walker and his father, other family members include Walker’s mother, his teenage children, and his brother, the local District Attorney. While the series is largely episodic as was its predecessor, many of its arcs center on the family dynamics. These were the scenes that Pileggi felt cemented his character.
It All Comes Down to Family
“His ranch, his family, is his life,” said Pileggi. “This is the third generation Walker family, and it’s not his nature just to walk away from something like that because legacy and family [are] huge to Bonham.”
Like Pileggi, Padalecki also feels that family is a core motivator in the series. When discussing the differences between his roles on Walker and Supernatural, he emphasized how Walker is “very much a father and a widower.”
Moreover, much of the series centers around the grief and love shared by the family. A key storyline in the first season involves solving the murder of Walker’s wife, Olivia. This event shook the whole family. It led to Walker’s decision to go undercover in the first place. As such, it should come as no surprise that Pileggi’s approach to the role of Bonham is tied to Walker’s focus on the family.
Family Is Not an Act
For the cast of Walker, family comes first offscreen as well. Padalecki revealed that he only agreed to the show in the first place because he could be close to his children. His previous show filmed in Vancouver, while Walker films in his hometown of Austin, Texas.
“It’s awesome,” said Padalecki. “A lot less flying. I don’t even know where my passport is right now, where I usually have it plastered to me. But yeah, I get to drive to work every day and I get to drive home to my wife and kids.”
As for Pileggi, he feels that filming in Austin is “a treat and a joy.” Some of his favorite moments were “just coming to set.”
