During a recent episode of Jeopardy!, reigning champion Matt Amodio shared a funny story that the game show called his I Love Lucy moment.
In a famous episode of I Love Lucy, the Ricardos sell their old washing machine to their next-door neighbors Fred and Ethel. The hilarious scene from the classic television show occurs in the “Never Do Business With Friends” episode. Everything seems to be just fine with the washing machine as it’s installed in its new home and first put to use. But it suddenly malfunctions and goes haywire as it sprays water and bubbles all over their kitchen and the four friends.
Amodio had a similar experience once with a dishwasher when he was a young adult. The Yale graduate student didn’t know there was specific soap used in a dishwasher. Therefore he added dish soap to the washer, and all hell broke loose not long after.
“I heard that you had an I Love Lucy type of incident,” host Mayim Bialik said to Amodio.
“Yeah, I was a grown-up, and I was doing the dishwasher for the first time apparently. And I thought, ‘I can figure this one out.’ It turns out not all soap is the same. And so I put in dish soap and pretty soon it was just all over the place. So it was squeaky clean,” Amodio joked about his dishwasher mishap.
The current Jeopardy! champion may be a trivia genius. But it’s good to know he makes mistakes like the rest of us in everyday life as well.
“Sounds like Matt Amodio had his own I Love Lucy moment,” Jeopardy! wrote on Instagram.
‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Talks ‘Tough’ Day-to-Day of His Winning Streak
Reigning champion Matt Amodio goes into tonight’s episode with a 25-game win streak. He’s already earned a spot in the Jeopardy! Hall of Fame since he’s worked his way up to third place on the all-time wins list. Amodio only has legends James Holzhauer and Ken Jennings in front of him now, but still has a long way to go to catch up to Jennings’ 74-game win streak.
While he continues to crush his competition on the game show, a winning streak of this magnitude comes with some challenges. Amodio recently opened up about how grueling the day-to-day process can be on Jeopardy!.
“Having to go for a full day, ride the energy all day with all that enthusiasm, and then knowing that you have to go to sleep early and then wake up early to be ready to do it all again—it’s tough,” Amodio explained to The Ringer. “I think that’s one of the reasons why you have so few long-term champions right there, where even if the game weren’t also changing underneath you with new questions, that physical aspect is really tough.”
