‘Wheel of Fortune’ Host Pat Sajak Teases When He’ll Leave the Show

“Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak definitely has retirement plans on his mind, even as he continues hosting the iconic game show.

We can’t blame him when he’s been hosting for nearly four decades. Sajak took over from Chuck Woolery back in December 1981. His iconic co-host Vanna White joined the show the year after that.

White and Sajak spoke to Entertainment Tonight earlier this week ahead of the Season 2 premiere of “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.” In addition to chatting about the show, the two hosts also opened up about the future of the show and their time on it so far.

“We’re certainly closer to the end than the beginning,” Sajak, 74, said. “I’d like to leave before people tune in and look at me and say, ‘Ooh, what happened to him?’”

From the looks of him and White, who’s 64-years-old, they’ll have many more years before they have to worry about that. White in particular looks like she hasn’t aged a day.

“I wouldn’t bet on seeing us in, like, 10 years, I would say,” Sajak continued. He asked White, “Is that fair [to say]?”

“Probably, yes,” White answered.

Sajak called their time together on “Wheel of Fortune” already “unfathomable.” He’s now the longest-running game show host in history, a journey White’s taken with him almost every step of the way.

“We’ve been together for like 38 years and he’s like my brother,” White said. “He’s funny. I mean, we could finish each other’s sentences if we wanted to. We know each other that well.”

And America knows them pretty well too, after watching the duo on their television screens for so long. It wouldn’t be “Wheel of Fortune” without both Sajak and White, which is why fans were happy to hear that they renewed their contracts together. The pair won’t be going anywhere before 2024, per their new contracts.

‘Wheel of Fortune’ Host Pat Sajak Reveals Who He Wants to See This Season on the ‘Celebrity’ Spin-Off

Aside from talking about their time on the show, the two ‘Wheel of Fortune” hosts also talked to Entertainment Tonight about the upcoming season of “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.” This will be the second season of the primetime special, which will air this Sunday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

A slew of fantastic celebrities will take the stage this season, but for our kick-off episode, these three will be front and center. “Seinfeld” actor Jason Alexander will compete against “Dancing With the Stars” pro dancer Cheryl Burke and “DWTS” contestant/WWE wrestler Michael “The Miz” Mizanin.

But out of all the celebrities out there, Sajak has one in mind who he’d love to see compete.

“I would pick Meryl Streep, because I just want to have Meryl Streep standing there and saying, ‘Come on, big money!’” Sajak said with a laugh. “That’s my dream.”
