Why ‘Blue Bloods’ and ‘FBI’ Can Never Crossover

by Jennifer Shea

Fans of both Blue Bloods and FBI would like to see a crossover episode mixing the two shows, but fans should be careful what they wish for. The world of TV procedurals is complex and littered with contradictions.

Here’s why a Blue Bloods-FBI crossover may be a tall order. FBI has already done a crossover episode with Chicago PD, which has done several crossovers with Law & Order: SVU. And SVU, like Blue Bloods, deals with police cases in New York City. So in the FBI universe, the cast of SVU would be the most consonant choice for a crossover, since the FBI has already dabbled in the joint Chicago PDSVU realm, as Looper notes.

In other words, there would be a clash between SVU, which already has its own commissioner figure, Lyle Morris (John Driver), and Blue Bloods. In Blue Bloods, Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) is NYPD commissioner, and he’s never heard of Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).

Blue Bloods Is Off Until Jan. 7

Meanwhile, since Dec. 10, Blue Bloods has been on a hiatus that lasts until Jan. 7. The most recent episode that aired saw Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) begin to doubt her plans to run for district attorney and Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and his partner Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) hunt down a tough-to-find suspect.

The upcoming episode, which is titled “Old Friends,” brings the return of Lyle Lovett as Major Waylon Gates. According to a CBS press release obtained by Pop Culture, Danny teams up with Gates to track down an illegal drug shipment headed for New York City and cut it off before the drugs hit the streets. Meanwhile, Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) uncovers some troubling news about an old mentor when he assists a neighbor with a gambling debt. And Frank butts heads with Mayor Chase over a fight between protesters and police officers at a recent demonstration.

But Lovett is not the only celebrity guest star to appear on Blue Bloods this season. The following episode will feature Jimmy Buffett as a con artist pretending to be – wait for it – Jimmy Buffett. Danny is determined to hunt the con artist down after he mistakenly pays for the scammer’s meal at a pricey restaurant. The episode airs on Jan. 14.

Donnie Wahlberg Has an Idea for a Crossover

And who would the actors like to cross over with? If it’s up to Blue Bloods’ Wahlberg, he and his castmates would head to Los Angeles for a week in February to shoot a crossover episode with NCIS: Los Angeles. And then he’d like to drag Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J over to New York City around the same time and watch them freeze their butts off for a week.

No availability for NCIS: LA? That’s okay: Wahlberg has a second choice. He says filming a crossover episode in Hawaii with Hawaii Five-O would also work just fine.
