Why ‘Fixer Upper’ Stars Chip and Joanna Gaines Weren’t Prepared for Fame That Came with Success

Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines weren’t prepared for the fame that came with their success. The couple never expected they’d get tabloid attention due to their success on a show where they remodel homes, and we can’t blame them. But that’s exactly what happened to the couple, with tabloids even going as far as speculating about the two getting a divorce.

When asked by TODAY if they expected this at all, Chip answered with an emphatic “No.”

“It’s funny; I mean, when I think about these circumstances, I think they’re hilarious. I’m like, ‘I can’t believe that these things are happening to us.’ I mean, who would care about that?” He said. But Joanna said there’s even a weirder side to their fame. Fans will approach them and ask them if the tabloids are right about their divorce.

It’s gotten so bad that the two have had to speak up on multiple occasions that they are still very much married and not planning on changing that.

“We do our due diligence in letting people know, as much as we can, this isn’t us,” she explained. “Don’t be scammed.”

How the ‘Fixer Upper’ Couple First Met

The two just didn’t make it clear they aren’t getting a divorce. They also talked about the heartwarming story of when they first met. Chip met Joanna when he walked into her family’s tire shop.

“Her dad made the mistake of putting a pic of the family behind the counter at his shop. I knew I’d marry her one day just by the picture on the wall,” the Fixer Upper star said. After that, he’d make up reasons he’d need to get his car fixed so he could spend some time with Joanna.

The two met in 2001 and married in 2003 and have since created a home design and improvement empire.

And their marriage is still going strong. In a 2016 interview, Chip talked about how much he appreciates the fact that Joanna lets him be himself.

“I think that’s one of the reasons that I love her like I do,” Chip told I am Second. “I mean, I feel like she knows me in a way that has caused me to stop acting. You know? I feel like I’ve really been an actor. I’ve been a character my whole life. I’ve always tried to prove something to someone.”

But with Joanna, that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. And while not many married couples could handle also being co-workers, these two seem to do it well.

The two used to do their show on HGTV, but are now moving to their own network, Magnolia Network. In this version of the show, Chip can freely share more of his authentic self.
