Will ‘9-1-1’ Get a New Character in 2022?

by Anna Dunn

9-1-1 is on a months-long hiatus. So now, fans have some burning questions. For instance, a lot of people are wondering if the show will add a new character. With Eddie gone and Chimney still out looking for Maddie, the 118 seems a bit short-staffed.

Ravi has become a more central character on 9-1-1, but he’s still a rookie. That means he’s not a suitable replacement for all the recently departed firefighters. So many are curious about getting a new character who has a bit more experience under their belt. But if Eddie stays, that may not be necessary. We still don’t know Eddie’s fate.

In the 9-1-1 mid-season finale, Eddie said that he wanted to leave the 118 after a heartfelt conversation with his son where he worried about his safety. But whether or not he’ll actually follow through remains unclear. Eddie is a fan-favorite character, and people really don’t want to see him go.

‘9-1-1’ Fans Also Have Questions about Maddie and Chimney’s Relationship

Another big question fans want to see answered is about Maddie and Chimney. The two were a rock-solid couple, but after Maddie started suffering from post-partum depression, the relationship went downhill. Maddie, suffering from a mental health crisis, left Chimney and their baby behind and fled her life in Los Angeles.

Fans were hoping to see more of a conclusion between the two in the mid-season finale, but we still don’t know much. Chimney spent the entirety of the most recent season looking for Maddie, and we have no idea how the relationship is going to play out once he finds her.

Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays Maddie, spoke of why she made the decision that she did. And how trauma has influenced where she stands.

“When you’ve experienced real trauma as she has, there are always new ways for that trauma to come up. For Maddie, the percentage of joy and happiness in her life is becoming much more than the darkness, so she’s headed in the right direction. But when you give someone a story like that, it’s hard to ever fully recover,” she said.

So a lot of what she went through is also a product of not only her post-partum depression but old wounds coming back. Hopefully, Chimney will be able to find her and bring her home. The two would have a LOT of healing to do, but maybe, something can work.

Unfortunately, 9-1-1 won’t return until sometime in the spring of 2022. But there’s still something to look forward to that’s coming out sooner. 9-1-1: Lone Star, the spinoff of 9-1-1 that takes place in Austin, Texas, is coming back on January 3rd at 8/7 central on Fox.
