Will Ferrell is producing a new sister comedy about Jeopardy! starring Sandra Oh and Awkwafina. The SNL alum’s production company, Gloria Sanchez Productions, has sold the rights to the project to 20th Century Studios after initially striking a deal with Netflix.
The studio has picked Jessica Yu to direct. Hocus Pocus 2 screenwriter Jen D’Angelo is writing the script. Moreover, Ferrell and his Gloria Sanchez co-founder Jessica Elbaum will produce. Also producing are Itay Reiss and Maggie Haskins of Artists First, Deadline reports.
Finally, executive producing is Gloria Sanchez’s Alex Brown.
New Comedy Revolves Around Jeopardy!
The plot of Ferrell and Elbaum’s comedy revolves around two women who set off on a crazy cross-country journey toward Jeopardy! stardom. Awkwafina plays a razor-sharp but uptight Jeopardy! superfan who reconnects with her estranged, train wreck sister. Oh plays the latter character. The two of them hatch a plot to pay off their mother’s gambling debts. Unfortunately, it requires transforming Awkwafina’s character into a real-life Jeopardy! champ.
Meanwhile, Oh has been keeping quite busy. She’s in production on Season 4 of the Emmy-winning series Killing Eve. She recently starred in the Netflix dramedy series The Chair. And she lent her voice to a character in the Amazon series Invincible.
Ditto Awkwafina, whose Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens launched its second season this past summer. Awkwafina also appeared in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a global blockbuster. And she’s in the upcoming Swan Song from Apple and Renfield from Universal, to boot.
Ferrell & Elbaum’s Gloria Sanchez Signed a Three-Year First-Look Deal with 20th Century
What’s more, this past summer, news broke that 20th Century Studios had inked a three-year first-look deal with Gloria Sanchez Productions. The deal was for feature-length movies in theaters and streaming.
Gloria Sanchez started out focusing on female voices in comedy, per Deadline, and later diversified into several genres and platforms.
“We are thrilled to be working with Jessica, Will, and the rest of the team at Gloria Sanchez,” 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell said upon announcing the deal. “They bring an incredible depth of experience making smart, hilarious films. And their passion for fresh filmmaking voices aligns perfectly with our vision here at 20th.”
As for Elbaum and Ferrell? They were thrilled to sign the deal, too, they said. And they have reason to believe 20th Century shares their vision.
“We’re beyond excited to have found a home in 20th Century Studios and to be working with an incredible team who fundamentally believes in what we’re doing at Gloria Sanchez,” the duo said in a statement. “They share our creative vision and we can’t wait to work together to bring fresh stories to screens big and small.”
“We’re already planning a six-month company retreat in the Cayman Islands,” they added. “Why the Cayman Islands? Don’t worry about it!”
