Will there be a Season 24 of Law & Order: SVU?

In February 2020, NBC announced that three more seasons of the hit crime show will be made. Season 21 was a milestone for the team as it surpassed Gunsmoke and the original Law & Order series to become the longest-running live-action primetime television show. Additionally, the show celebrated its milestone 500th episode. Furthermore, Lt. Olivia Benson became the longest-running character in a primetime live action series, as she was there since the show’s inception.

With another season ahead of us, this means that Law & Order: SVU will at least reach episode 544. It seems as though Hargitay will be with the show for the upcoming season as well.

“Mic drop. Boom. Dun dun. Any of them will do. Thank you @NBC #SVU21 ➡️#SVU24 #Epic,” Mariska Hargitay wrote after the big announcement was unveiled.

Finally, Law & Order: SVU Season 24 is expected to air in September 2022. The series is available to watch and stream through NBC, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, YouTube TV, and Comcast On-Demand.

“I hope it doesn’t go on forever,” Hargitay noted to People. “I hope that one day we’ll go, ‘Wait, what? This doesn’t happen,’ [and] that this kind of sexual violence goes away. But right now I am still staggered by how many people come up to me and say: ‘Your show changed my life. Your show is the reason that I reported. Your show is the reason I didn’t wash off the DNA.’”

She concluded, “That is the most gratifying part of my job.”

‘Law & Order: SVU’ Meeting

Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni met during auditions for Law & Order: SVU. Hargitay actually mistook him for Mad Men star John Slattery.

“I said, ‘Slattery!’ He goes, ‘Meloni!’” she told Glamour. Meloni quickly forgot about the mixup and they quickly got along. Their relationship was so natural immediately. He began to tell Hargitay a story when they walked into the room filled with the creators. He even told the network executives to wait while he finished telling it.

“He’s a ballbuster,” Hargitay added. “And to see him back stronger, faster—he’s like the bionic man. He’s like this 60-year-old superhero who is even more dedicated, more badass, more pure, stronger, more focused. He’s just more of everything that he was.”

In a previous interview with Inside the Actors Studio, Hargitay revealed that the two were set to audition individually. However, they ended up auditioning as a pair. It seems like everyone realized just how magical their chemistry would be.

“I was already standing up, and so we did this huge hug, and we’d never met,” Hargitay previously explained. “He has a huge tattoo of Jesus on the cross, and so I said, ‘Oh my gosh, are you a Christian?’ And he’s like, ‘Um, no.” And I said, ‘Then why do you have that?’ He goes, ‘Just liked his commitment.’ That sort of sums up Meloni.”

“I knew it was done then. It just happened, it was a pairing,” she continued. “From the first second before we even [auditioned]. You can’t write it.”
