According to a Cocoa, Florida-based funeral home, former X-Factor star Freddie Combs passed away at 49. He was a minister in his day-to-day life. Fans took to Combs quickly after his audition aired on television. His stories of battling weight and overcoming adversity made him real. The Tennessee native was an inspiring story along with his wife Kay.

When Combs auditioned for the talent show, he had recently lost almost 400lbs. He had previously weighed 920lbs. With his wife Kay helping him out on stage, the judges were taken back as he sang Wind Beneath My Wings. The 1980s Bette Midler hit became his own right there on stage. It was a powerful performance, and luckily we can all watch it and enjoy his talent.

Freddie Combs went out in front of Simon Cowell, Briney Spears, L.A. Reid, and Demi Lovato, not to mention a packed theatre, and gave a moving performance. His passion and soul can be felt in each note he sings out. While he didn’t have a long run on the show, he did make an impact on fans who were taken aback by his voice. Of course, it is the most unlikely successes that make fans love shows like X-Factor.

All through his trials and tribulations, Freddie’s wife was by his side. Something he always mentioned when given the opportunity.

“My wife Kay, she’s an incredible woman. She started caring for me right after we were married in ’96, and as my weight rose, more things were required of her. She’s the closest thing to an angel and a saint that I know,” Combs said during his audition.

Freddie Combs Passed Among Loved Ones

According to TMZ, Freddie Combs passed away last Friday. His wife Kay said that he was surrounded by friends and family in the hospital. In the years following his appearance on X-Factor, Combs continued to lose weight. His wife says she is proud of her husband for battling his way down to 385lbs.

“I have so much gratitude to be his wife for 25 years and to be his best friend,” Kay said about her late husband.

At just 49-years-old the minister and singer passed away due to kidney failure. Over the years he had maintained a YouTube channel with a few thousand subscribers. There he would post covers of songs and sing for his viewers. He also worked as a minister and was a religious man throughout his life. With a story like his, surely he had plenty to talk about.

Fans will remember him for his positive attitude, do anything demeanor, and of course his lovely singing voice. Few people ever get to perform in front of the likes of Simon Cowell and the judges on X-Factor, even fewer get to impress them in the way that he did. Rest in peace.
