On Monday, actor Josh Gad reunited the cast of the ’90s comedy Wayne’s World during the most recent episode of his YouTube quarantine series Reunited Apart.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gad has reunited the cast of Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, and others. This week, actors Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe and many more joined him from Wayne’s World. The Saturday Night Live skit turned major motion picture followed Wayne and Garth, two best friends who host a radio rock show from their basement.
Additionally, the movie included some legendary rockstars who also joined the actors on Gad’s reunion. They included Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, and shock rocker Alice Cooper.
The reunion opens up with the lead singer and lead guitarist of Aerosmith joining Gad before the full-on reunion. Technically, the rockers weren’t in Wayne’s World, they were in Wayne’s World 2. Therefore, in a comedic opening to the YouTube reunion, Gad had the musicians “help” him get in touch with the movie’s two stars. They make fun of Gad a bit before conceding.
Myers and Carvey then join the two rockstars and immediately go into character. Wayne and Garth have some fun with Tyler and Perry in a short scripted segment. Subsequently, the four open up the reunion by recreating the Wayne’s World theme song as the episode kicks off.
‘Wayne’s World’ and the Famous ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Scene
One of the most iconic scenes of the movie is the intro of the film. Garth goes around town picking up his friends in his tiny blue car with flame decals on the side. Wayne gets in the car and plays a cassette tape of Queen‘s classic hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” as the five men hilariously recreate the song packed into Garth’s little car. During the reunion, Carvey who plays Garth touched on the song choice for the movie.
“‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is just a full-blown masterpiece,” Carvey explains. “It’s a piece of music that’s just so brilliant, and I give Mike (Myers) total credit for picking it out. I didn’t get it initially, but when that breaks kicks in, and we syncopate to it, it’s pretty magic. It still gets me when I see it.”
According to May, Queen’s legendary lead singer Freddie Mercury was able to watch the scene prior to passing away in 1991.
“You, Mike, did get me the videotape (of the scene). I took it around to Freddie not long before he (passed away) and showed it to him. Because you said you wanted to have the approval,” May said during the call, speaking to Myers. “He loved it! He just laughed and laughed. He was very weak, but he just smiled and laughed. He said, ‘How wonderful is that?'”
Cooper Jokes That They Couldn’t Get The Rolling Stones or The Beatles
In another memorable scene, Wayne and Garth attend an Alice Cooper concert and get backstage passes. The goofy pair walk around backstage constantly showing their passes to everyone in sight as they head to Cooper’s dressing room.
Wayne tells Cooper how much they enjoyed the show, while Garth is so starstruck he can’t speak. The rocker goes on to give the duo an amusing history lesson on Milwaukee, WI. Of course, the memorable scene comes to an end with Wayne and Garth’s famous “We’re not worthy!” lines as they bow in praise of Cooper.
Gad and the guests revisited Cooper’s cameo during the reunion Zoom meeting. The singer joked that he must’ve been their last choice for the film.
“I think they probably couldn’t get the Stones or the Beatles,” Cooper joked about his selection. “Scraping the barrel until I was the only one left.”
