‘Alaskan Bush People’: Bear Brown Snaps New Selfie in the Wilderness

by Jennifer Shea

The cast of the hit reality series “Alaskan Bush People” are still recovering from the death of their patriarch, Billy Brown. But Billy’s son Bear has been communing with nature, perhaps in an effort to find peace, and he’s posted a new selfie of himself in the wilderness on his Instagram account.

In the post, Bear, wearing a brown jacket and black t-shirt, appears to be gazing off into the skyline. Bear posted the photo without comment.

Recently, Bear opened up about his favorite memories of his late father on the Discovery Channel special, “The Legacy of Billy Brown.” And naturally, they involve exploring the outdoors and getting up close to nature.

“One of my favorite things to do with Dad when we’d go out and we’d hunt together was just sitting there in a blind and waiting or stalking through the woods,” Bear said. “I will always remember that about my dad and I will greatly miss the times we had and the times we won’t have again. But it will always be in my heart and I will always cherish those memories.”

‘Alaskan Bush People’ Tribute Special Offered Trove of Memorable Moments

The special aired new footage of Billy explaining how family and faith drove him to forge a new legacy rooted in a wilderness lifestyle. “Alaskan Bush People” follows his family as they relocate from Alaska’s bush to the North Cascade Mountains in Washington. The series began in 2014. Its 12th season ended last October, per Deadline.

On the special, Billy’s surviving family members shared cherished memories of the family patriarch. His eldest daughter, Snowbird, said she’d miss Billy reading to them. His son Noah said he’d always remember his father’s pursuit of his dream to live life on his terms. And his daughter Rain said she would never forget Billy’s nickname for her, “Baby Girl.”

It Was Bear Who Announced Billy’s Death

Billy died at age 68 after having a seizure. It was his son Bear who broke the news to the world in an Instagram post.

“We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved patriarch Billy Brown passed away last night after suffering from a seizure,” Bear shared on his private Instagram account, alongside a photo of Billy and Billy’s wife Ami. “He was our best friend — a wonderful and loving dad, granddad and husband and he will be dearly missed. He lived his life on his terms, off the grid and off the land and taught us to live like that as well. We plan to honor his legacy going forward, and to continue with his dream. We ask for privacy and prayers during this painful time. God Bless Everyone!”

Billy reportedly had a history of health problems, going to the hospital several times in recent years. Doctors attributed his difficulty breathing to heart problems and told him to move to a lower altitude. But Billy, determined as ever to live on his own terms, continued to live on a mountain.

When Billy died, he was at home and surrounded by family members. His family has said they will always remember his fortitude and love of nature.
