Every family has its own secret recipes, right? We expect no less from the Browns. The Alaskan Bush People kin often hunt deer, as these “prey animals,” as Bear Brown describes them, are plentiful in the namesake of their show.
“Deer are herd animals, there’s a ton of them,” Bear adds of their oft-prey. Unlike the rest of the United States however, where white-tailed deer are a main course for hunters, Alaska is home to Sitka blacktail deer.
Of the species, Gabe says they’re “the dependable steak of Alaska.” How’s that for an Outsider motto? Love it!
Such answers come courtesy of the following 2017 Ask The Bush People segment. Within, brothers Gabe and Bear give thoughtful answers to fan questions. And thankfully, one fan thought to ask for their family’s deer stew recipe!
“What is your recipe for deer stew?” Bear reads the question aloud. But not so fast!
“Shew… It’s a secret!” Gabe smiles, turning to his brother as if to stop him from revealing it.

Bear matches his grin, before answering with the recipe:
“As far as I know… Mom and dad’s recipe for deer stew is just basically the deer itself, and then any ingredients you happen to have fresh-grown in the garden are the best!”
As Bear lists, those ingredients are:
- Venison of choice
Then, all of these fresh ingredients are to be “Slow roasted on an open fire.”
“Doesn’t get much better than that!” Bear concludes.
But Gabe Brown thinks this shouldn’t deter fans. “That’s the best thing about Deer stew!” he offers. “You can cook it anyway! If you have the deer, you can have deer stew!”
“Traditionally, we have the deer, we have potatoes,” the brothers agree. “But yeah! It’s just all about what you want to throw in them.”

Alongside this recipe request, Gabe and Bear answer other fan questions for Discovery, like: “Why don’t you eat bears?” An odd question to ask a man named Bear Brown, but the answers from both brothers make us glad someone asked!
Their response to that specific question, which we covered here in tandem, is particularly excellent – and worth checking out for any fan of the show.
