‘Alaskan Bush People’: Will the Show Continue After Billy Brown’s Death?

by Madison Miller

The TV show “Alaskan Bush People” has been on for 12 seasons and has a total of 90 episodes.

The Discovery Channel reality television show tells the story of the Brown family as they survive off the grid in the wilderness. It first took place near Hoonah, Alaska, and then the family moved near Okanogan County, Washington.

However, the patriarch of the family, Billy Brown, passed away on Feb. 7 from a seizure. He was 68 when he died.

In many ways, Billy was the lifeline for the show during his time on the Discovery Channel series. It has not yet been confirmed whether or not there will be another season following his death. However, given his heavy appearance on the show and the family’s close bond, it’s very possible season 12 might be the last we see of the Brown clan on TV.

Bear Brown and His Father

The news of Billy’s death was actually confirmed by his son, Bear. He shared the news with fans on Instagram, according to Deadline.

“We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved patriarch Billy Brown passed away last night after suffering from a seizure. He was our best friend — a wonderful and loving dad, granddad and husband and he will be dearly missed. He lived his life on his terms, off the grid and off the land and taught us to live like that as well. We plan to honor his legacy going forward, and to continue with his dream. We ask for privacy and prayers during this painful time! God bless everyone!”

The family is asking for privacy and space as they deal with their father’s death. It’s unclear if honoring his legacy means also filming the show or continuing to live off the grid. The premise of the show was Billy’s idea.

Discovery has not yet commented on the future of the show. Billy Brown just passed away a week ago so it’s too soon for any decision to be made regarding the show.

They did post their own tribute to the outdoors-enthusiast, however. Shortly after the news broke, the network wrote, “We are devastated to hear of Billy Brown’s sudden passing. He has been part of the Discovery family for years — a trailblazer, a lovely man and most definitely one of a kind. Our heart is with his family and those that knew him and loved him as they deal with this devastating loss.”

Season 13 of ‘Alaskan Bush People’

The next season of the show has actually already been filmed, according to Popculture.

Bear Brown confirmed this on Instagram where he wrote, “Be sure to check out the new season of Alaskan Bush People and all your questions will be answered!!!!” The new season features Bear getting married as well.

However, this was posted a few days before his death. This means that Billy would still likely be in the show. Now the network and family must decide if airing and moving forward with the show without Billy is something they want to consider, whether it’s filmed already or not.

There has been a marathon of older episodes of the show on Discovery to honor the life of Billy Brown.
