Alex Trebek’s Widow, Jean Trebek, Reveals New Photo from ‘Pitstop in Arkansas’ with Son Matthew

Jean Trebek, widow of the late legendary “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, posted a throwback photo to Instagram from a road trip she took with her son Matthew.

“#Throwback to when Matthew and I made a pitstop in Arkansas, the ‘Natural State’,” Jean posted. “They’re known for their abundance of crystals!”

The photo depicts a bright turquoise one-story building with a black roof, with white signs for crystals, minerals, stones and gifts painted on the exterior. Shelves filled with small items, a small wrought-iron table and a wooden bench decorate the foreground where Matthew is standing.

Jean’s husband Alex died on Nov. 8, 2020 of Stage IV pancreatic cancer. He was 80 years old.

Jean Trebek Was Touched By Outpouring of Support

Jean Trebek wrote about the couple’s ordeal in Guideposts, a Christian magazine dedicated to personal growth. She recounted how the family had gone on a trip to Israel when she noticed Alex’s coloring was off. That led to a trip to her husband’s doctor, who ran some tests. Then some more tests.

Then came the phone call. “We need to talk,” Alex’s doctor told them. It turned out Alex had pancreatic cancer, and it had spread to the lining of his stomach.

“I wondered then how long we had,” she wrote last July. “More than a year and a half later, we’re still at it, every day a gift.”

But Jean said that as soon as Alex went public with his cancer diagnosis, the heartfelt concern from fans was overwhelming.

“The viewers and contestants really care,” she wrote. “After all, they’ve been with him even longer than I have.”

Alex Trebek Had ‘Great Sense of Humor’

In a 2019 interview with People magazine, Jean revealed that the couple had their share of challenges, but through it all, they had each other’s back.

They’d had their struggles, Jean said. “And then we have our really beautiful times,” she added, “where we’re just so blessed to know that we’re in each other’s courtyard.”

After his cancer diagnosis, Trebek joked that he simply had to beat the odds and survive a while longer because his “Jeopardy!” contract ran through the 2021-22 season.

“Truth told, I have to because under the terms of my contract, I have to host Jeopardy! for three more years!” he said. “So help me!”

Jean loved Alex’s sense of humor as well as his humility. She said Alex remained youthful even as he aged due to his insatiable curiosity.

“He’s got a great sense of humor,” she told People. “He takes his job very seriously, but won’t take himself too seriously.”

As for Alex, he told People that his only regret was that he only got 29 years together with Jean.
