Alma Wahlberg had a life worth writing about. Growing up poor in Dorchester, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of alcoholic parents. She went on to raise nine children of her own. And there’s no denying that we’d all recognize a couple of them instantly.

In a 2018 interview, Alma talked about the ups and downs she experienced throughout her life. Thankfully, she had reached a place where she could be happy and was open enough to share some of her insights. She struggled mightily to provide for her children and support them.

But how did Alma Wahlberg do it? How was the matriarch able to make ends meet and raise such a successful group of children? Before she passed, she was writing an autobiography that touched on all that and more. In 2018, she was generous enough to read from the unfinished book’s introduction.

“People know me as being the mother of famous children. And although this fact has brought me many gifts into my life, and has afforded me opportunities that may never have been possible otherwise. There is a whole lot more to my story than most people know. I’ve lived with alcoholism and abuse, struggled with poverty and experienced great wealth, lost so many that I loved, struggled to raise nine children,” Alma read in her 2018 interview with WCVB 5. “In the end, I survived, and this is my story, the story of how I got from there to here.”

Alma Wahlberg’s Children Pay Their Respects

Her story clearly makes for a fascinating autobiography. And in the wake of her death, son Donnie Wahlberg echoed that sentiment on Twitter.

“My mom Alma’s joy for life, love and people – combined with a pride in her humble beginnings and refusal to forget where she came from – undoubtedly shaped me into the man that I am. I’ve often said, if you like anything about me, I got it from Alma,” Donnie wrote in an Instagram tribute post.

Another one of Alma’s sons, actor Mark Wahlberg, expressed his grief and gratitude in a post of his own.
