American Idol fans can expect to see a familiar face fill in for Luke Bryan as a judge on Monday night’s episode of the ABC singing competition.

We recently learned that the country superstar has tested positive for COVID-19. Luke Bryan took to social media to let his more than nine million fans know that he wouldn’t be making it for the first live episode.

“I’m sad to say I won’t be a part of tonight’s first live @AmericanIdol show,” Bryan tweeted earlier. “I tested positive for COVID but I’m doing well and look forward to being back at it soon.”

As a result, longtime American Idol judge, Paula Abdul, will make her return to the series. Abdul was judging on the popular singing show back when Fox aired the series. And on Monday night, she will step back into the judge’s seat alongside Lionel Richie and Katy Perry.

“We’ll miss you tonight @LukeBryanOnline ‼️ Thank you for trusting me with your judge’s seat! 😉❤️” Abdul announced on Twitter. “Tune in at 8|7c on @abcnetwork for my Idol return 😱 #AmericanIdol #PaulasBack”

Meanwhile, American Idol announced that the 44-year-old Bryan will be at home resting in quarantine for the time being.

“Luke will be missed at our 1st #AmericanIdol LIVE show tonight, but is resting in quarantine at home & we wish him a speedy recovery. We’re so excited to announce @PaulaAbdul will be stepping in as a guest judge with Lionel Richie & Katy Perry as we get closer to 👑 a new winner!”

Paula Abdul Filling in for Luke Bryan

American Idol fans are unquestionably disappointed that Luke Bryan won’t be taking the judge’s seat tonight during the show’s first live episode. But they at least can look forward to seeing the face of an old friend in Paula Abdul. Seeing her back on American Idol is sure to bring fans a bunch of nostalgia.

The 58-year-old Abdul was one of the original judges on the show when it premiered back in 2002. However, she exited Idol after its eighth season. The series then ended its run on Fox in 2016 before getting the green light from ABC to start back up in 2018. In addition to Bryan, Perry, and Richie as judges, they also brought back famous host Ryan Seacrest.

But on Monday night, it will be Paula Abdul’s first time appearing on the ABC version of the show. For more on Luke Bryan and American Idol, follow along right here on Outsider.
