‘American Idol’ Slumps in Ratings for Finale Featuring Luke Combs and Sheryl Crow

by Brandi Stillings

Marking its 19th season, this year’s American Idol season finale ratings took an exponential dive. After 15 years on FOX and four on ABC, the ratings have continued to drop over the years. However, the show usually does pretty well for ABC compared to its competition.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, and Bobby Bones as an in-house mentor, the singing competition features an impressive line-up of judges. They include: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan.

Not to mention, a special guest appearance by Sheryl Crow performing a duet with Season 19’s Graham DeFranco. Two-time contestant Arthur Gunn was supposed to join Sheryl. However, it’s rumored he didn’t want to attend at the last minute.

Although the judges are mainly there to offer advice, the audience has the final say. Fans submit their votes either online, through text message, or phone call. In the end, whoever has the most votes is the winner. They receive a recording contract and, of course, the American Idol title.

According to TVSeriesFinale.com, the ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. Displayed on their website, the chart shows various sections, such as air date, demographic, and ratings.

The chart shows Sunday episodes of Season 19 of American Idol. They averaged a 1.17 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and 6.88 million viewers. While, the Monday episodes averaged a 1.29 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and 6.66 million viewers.

Quite lower than their average Sundays and Mondays, the American Idol finale came in with lowered numbers. It had a 0.70 rating with 5.538 million viewers. With an all-time low rating, especially for a finale, it makes us question if there’ll be a renewed Season 20.

‘American Idol’ Season 19 Winner Chayce Beckham

The recently aired season finale lasted for two hours. The show also gave the viewing audience one more chance to get their final votes in for a winner. Competition was tight between three incredibly talented singers, including Chayce Beckham, Willie Spence and Grace Kinstler.

According to FoxNews.com, “With the penultimate performance behind them, the final two were joined by a rotating roster of celebrity guests as well as performances from their judges, Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan. Finally, it was time to announce the final tally of votes, which ultimately saw country singer Chayce Beckham crowned the Season 19 winner of “American Idol.”

After battling alcoholism, Beckham shares his experience and proves to fans he’s ready to move forward.

“When you’re sober for the first time, performing for a long time, going in, I was a broken person. I came out the other side just a little bit more healed,” Beckham told mentor Bobby Bones during the finale.
