Right as the live episodes of “American Idol” started on Monday, a popular contestant was suddenly missing from the stage.

The show has dwindled to the final 12 of the singing competition. The popular contestant, which many considered a “frontrunner,” is Wyatt Pike. He’s a 19-year-old singer-songwriter from Park City, Utah.

Wyatt Pike Leaves ‘American Idol’

The announcement was made at the very start of the show. Ryan Seacrest stated, “Before we get to the results, I have to tell you that finalist Wyatt Pike will not be competing in the competition. He had to drop out. But we wish him the very best.”

No further comments regarding Pike were made. According to the Washington Post, Pike left for personal reasons and spokespeople from “American Idol” cannot comment further than that. Throughout the rest of the night, Pike gained 10,000 Instagram followers as fans rushed to his social media during the show.

He hasn’t commented anything regarding his departure on social media, although he has plenty of fans expressing sadness over him leaving the show. His last Instagram post is a beautiful shot of Utah and a picture of him driving. It’s captioned, “Something to feel this through: home. Thankful for the rollercoaster I’m on today.”

Monday’s show had other elements of drama as well. Luke Bryan was missing after testing positive for the coronavirus. He was replaced by an original and familiar face of “American Idol,” Paula Abdul. She helped to pick the final 12 alongside Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

Pike as a Fan-Favorite

It is an uncommon occurrence for someone to quit the singing competition, especially so far into the show. Despite quitting the show, comments on social media seem to suggest that Pike stayed in Los Angeles for a little longer after his departure.

Early on, Wyatt Pike impressed the judges and became a fan-favorite when he performed an original song at his auditions. It was called “Best For You” and he shared that it was actually written for his sister.

Pike has heard quite the compliments from the judges during his time on the show. Fans continue to express their shock, disappointment, and sadness over Pike leaving on social media.

Since his audition, the singer has also performed “Blame It On Me” by George Ezra and collaborated with Ben Rector during the celebrity duets. He has also performed “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon.

The news of Pike leaving was not announced until Monday during the show. On social media, a couple of hours before the show aired, “American Idol” tweeted the Top 16. It included Pike at the time. It is unclear exactly when Pike decided to leave the show. There is a possibility that “American Idol” decided to wait to share the news during the live show instead of on social media.

Fans of the singer are still shocked they will no longer get to see him on the “American Idol” stage. In an earlier episode, Luke Bryan told Pike, “I remember one of the coolest things ever happened to me is the day I realized that I get to do music forever, under any circumstance. I’m telling you, Wyatt, you are going to be able to do music for the rest of your life.”
