‘American Pickers’: Former Star Frank Fritz Said He Was ‘Born’ To Collect Items

by Courtney Blackann

It’s a fair statement to say that most kids are curious about the world around them. For Frank Fritz of “American Pickers,” it was more than just a curiosity.

The professional junk collector has been procuring weird trinkets long before he appeared on the hit show. In a recent interview, Fritz said he “was born” collecting items.

From rocks and stones to stamps, coins and beer cans, the picker picked up on the habit quite early. His affinity for noticing things others didn’t led him to become an expert of sorts. Uncovering gems in other peoples’ junk, Fritz is now a seasoned collector.

The “American Pickers” star makes a sound living carefully observing pieces of history and discerning their worth. The pastime has become something of a popular hobby in recent years, largely due to the show’s success.

Interestingly, Fritz said his love of collecting old and forgotten items was a natural instinct. One that he turned into a profitable hobby.

Not all antiques are treasures, however. That’s where the trained eye of someone who’s both dedicated and knowledgable comes in.

“American Pickers” Frank Fritz Loves to Restore Motorcycles

If anything he collected became a passion, Frank Fritz says it’s his love of motorcycles. His savvy knowledge of of bikes throughout the years is something he loves to have fun with.

Owning a collection of about 60 motorcycles in total, the “Pickers” professional says the majority of them are in working condition. You could say motorcycles are a weakness Fritz embraces.

And one of his first loves? A 1959 Harley Davidson model he restored his sophomore year of high school. As a true biker fan, Fritz said he’s a regular attendant at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

“I was at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in August last year. I’ve been going to Sturgis for 40 years now. I just got inducted two years ago to the Sturgis Hall of Fame,” Fritz said. “To be inducted into the Hall of Fame is the biggest praise that I have ever received. It means everything to me. It is a dream come true.”

The former “American Pickers” frontman has a knack for rebuilding the bikes and turning them into beauties. There’s something about restoring them to their original design, he said.

When it comes to restoring antiques, Fritz has been open about not necessarily finding the most expensive items. He says his joy comes from the process of the restoration.

Further, the junker makes it a point to restore items to how they once looked without going overboard. It’s all about recreating their original beauty, he said.
