Long before she became famous as one of the stars of “American Pickers,” Danielle Colby grew up with her family in Iowa. And based on what she said during a recent appearance on “The Sailor Jerry” podcast, she grew up with two interesting parents.
Colby, who is now 45, said that some of her fondest memories of childhood were family trips.
“It’s interesting. You look back and there are pieces in everybody’s life that are really damaging. And then there are pieces that are, you know – like driving through the mountains with my dad. My dad would just uproot the family and all of a sudden we’d be in the mountains for a while. You know, we’d be traveling for a bit,” the “American Pickers” star shared.
Danielle Colby also opened up about her parents. She described her father as a man who is “always trying to find his center.” “(He is) an incredibly artistic man and comes from incredibly artistic people. Very hard on himself,” she added.
Colby’s mother is also an interesting person. “My mom always wanted to be a Playboy bunny, but ended up a Jehovah’s Witness. So, therefore, you have me,” she said with a laugh. Colby also shared that her mother is “an angel on earth.” And that her mother has lived a very interesting life herself.
“And she’s a handful. She’s a spitfire. She used to run with the Hell’s Angels when she was 12 or 13 years old. Hitchhiked up to New York when she was 14. She’s got some stories, dude,” Colby also said.
‘American Pickers’ Star Danielle Colby Described Her Father as ‘Loyal’ and ‘Loving’
The “American Pickers” star also said that her parents were two key parts in making her childhood a positive one.
“I’m fortunate enough to be able to talk about the plusses (from my childhood). … My parents – there are none like them in the world. None. I mean my father is the most protective man. And the most loyal, loving, kind man. I trust him more than any man in the world,” Colby shared. “They were protesting hippies. You know what I mean? That was their whole entire life – fighting the establishment.”
Danielle Colby also talked about growing up with bipolar disorder. “I think that my mental state right now is pretty much completely descriptive of my childhood. I’m bipolar. So, my childhood was full of incredible, euphoric – really like kumbaya kind of moments … And the absolute antithesis of that,” the “American Pickers” star explained.
In talking about her mother and father, Colby also shared that they raised their family in the Jehovah’s Witness tradition. While she no longer practices that belief system, the reality star said she is thankful for the lessons it taught her while she was growing up.
“Definitely, I’m not religious. I think my parents poured all of their religion into me and my two sisters. And I think that they created three loving, kind, loyal, protective, fairly intelligent children. And I think that all of the Jehovah’s Witness stuff really did go to build that piece of all of our personalities and I’m really thankful,” Colby said.
