Angelina Jolie really wanted to work with “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan on his upcoming movie “Those Who Wish Me Dead.”
Television fans may know Sheridan for being the mastermind behind the Dutton clan and their trials and tribulations. The director turned “Yellowstone” into a highly successful TV series for Paramount. And he is currently preparing to expand the property. But in Hollywood, Sheridan has carved a successful career as a director and writer, with a focus on crafting characters and worlds.
“He has a unique voice when it comes to characters within America, which had not been a prior focus of my work,” Jolie told EW. “I wanted to be in this world with him.”
“Those Who Wish Me Dead” will technically be Sheridan’s third time behind the camera. (He discredits the 2011 horror film “Vile” as something he only briefly helped out with). Previously, Sheridan acted as a screenwriter for “Sicario” and its sequel. He garnered praise for his 2017 film “Wind River,” which starred Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner.
“I’ve done action in fantasy,” Jolie continued. “This was different because it was real.”
Angelina Jolie Stars In the Upcoming Film
“Those Who Wish Me Dead” is based on a 2014 Michael Kortya novel. It will star Jolie as a smokejumper, a specialized firefighter that parachutes into infernos. In the film, Jolie’s firefighter will have to defend a 12-year-old girl from two assassins that want to kill her. A wildfire surrounds the duo and impedes Jolie’s character’s rescue efforts.
Jolie has made a career based upon action movie vehicles. But with Sheridan at the helm, the film promises to be a realistic tale of suspense. He’s known for his adept way of drawing the most from his performers as “Yellowstone” fans will know.
Additionally, the film will feature a real towering inferno. A stunt team carefully constructed and lit the set ablaze to create a real sense of danger.
“The first day we were in the fire, [I noticed] the heat and how quickly the winds would change and how quickly the fire would suddenly take to a tree that you weren’t expecting,” actor Finn Little said. “Our respect just grew day after day for these people on the front lines and how difficult this work is.”
Fans of Sheridan, Jolie, and “Yellowstone” won’t have long to wait for the film. “Those Who Wish Me Dead” goes to theaters and HBO Max on May 14.
