‘Arthur’ Set to End After 25 Seasons on PBS

Beloved and long-running children’s show, Arthur, is coming to an end after 25 seasons. The show has been a fixture on public television over the course of four decades. The anthropomorphic community of Elwood City provided children with life lessons, support, and entertainment.

The show is the longest-running children’s animated series ever. The only animated series that has lasted longer is The Simpsons. The premise of Arthur is simple. Following the life of Arthur, a young boy and aardvark. Arthur and his classmates are 8-years old and many of the episodes take place in a school setting. Arthur was important to many children throughout the years.

There was a time the show had such great success that a spin-off show was created. Postcards from Buster was created in 2003 and originally aired in 2004. Buster was Arthur’s best friend. The two would often share the same issues. Throughout the course of the show, many topics were covered from asthma, learning disabilities, bullying, family issues, and more.

‘Arthur’ Coming to an End

The show is on the way out the door. While it will be a somber moment for some, hopefully, a new show for a new generation can take its place. Public television helps so many. Without PBS and shows like Arthur, tons of children without cable television would have grown up with nothing to watch. One wonders if Arthur is destined for the Sesame Street route. It would be quite a shame to see another public access show become privatized.

However, it is likely that Arthur will just rerun on PBS for years to come. With 25 years of content, there isn’t much the children’s show hasn’t covered. However, the creator of the show, Kathy Waugh, isn’t happy with the decision.

Waugh recently said in a podcast, “Arthur is no longer in production. We had our wrap party two years ago, I think [PBS] made a mistake, and I think Arthur should come back and I know I’m not alone in thinking they made a mistake.”

According to Waugh, production on the show ended two years ago. The show had its wrap party and has been waiting for the release of the last two seasons. The last season, season 25 will air in the winter of 2022. So, for those fans still out there, you still have new content coming your way. With Waugh wanting to clearly keep the show going, perhaps there is an avenue where that happens.
