The 52-year-old actress unveiled the development during an Instagram Live chat with New York Times writer Nicholas Kristof. Kristof uploaded the conversations, which you can see below.

Judd says the next handful of hours were “incredibly harrowing.” Further, it began with “five hours of lying on the forest floor” as she waited for additional assistance.

A person also on the excursion was able to provide her basic help, but just in terms of comfort.

“With his leg under my badly misshapen leg, biting my stick,” Ashley Judd said. “Howling like a wild animal.”

Next, local Congolese carried Judd out of the country’s forest.

“An hour and a half in a hammock,” Judd explained. “Being carried out of the rainforest by my Congolese brothers, who were doing it barefoot, up and over hills, through the river.”

However, Judd wasn’t available to immediately reach a hospital. She spent a full day in Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, before finally being transported to South Africa.

A big part of her details of her treatment was acknowledging and highlighting the lack of medical capabilities the Congo has. Judd said she is now, “In an ICU trauma unit in beautiful South Africa, which has taken me in from the Congo: a country I deeply love which is not, unfortunately, equipped to deal with massive catastrophic injuries like I have had.”

She also added that having, “a simple pill to kill the pain when you’ve shattered a leg in four places and have nerve damage.”

The actress adds a statement of thanks.

“I’m in a lot of love,” Judd said. I’m in a lot of compassion and I’m in a lot of gratitude,” the actress said earlier in the conversation. “I thank everyone for their thoughts and their prayers and their support.”
