It has been 70 years since the first episode of “I Love Lucy” appeared on television screens across America. The show made stars – and icons – out of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Soon, a new film will fans a look into their marriage and their work in the beloved sitcom. That film is “Being The Ricardos.”
On Sunday, Nov. 14, the two stars and the respected director talked about the film during Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles event, according to Deadline. While on stage, Sorkin described his “Being The Ricardos” film as a “love story.”
“(The story) weaves in and out so beautifully telling (Lucy and Desi’s) story. It just weaves in and out — this is really a love story. It’s a romantic drama,” the 60-year-old director explained.
Aaron Sorkin also talked about the relationship between “I Love Lucy” stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. As fans are aware, the two were married, but eventually divorced. They had two children together – daughter, Lucie Arnaz and son, Desi Arnaz, jr.
The end of the marriage between the “I Love Lucy” stars saddened many people – including Sorkin. “Lucy and Desi were passionately in love with each other, and it’s just heartbreaking that the two of them couldn’t get it together to have this relationship for very interesting reasons,” Sorkin also said during Sunday’s event.
‘Being The Ricardos’ Will Focus On One Week During the Making of ‘I Love Lucy’
So, Aaron Sorkin decided to begin “Being The Ricardos” on a Monday of the sitcom’s production. It was on that day of the week that the table read for “I Love Lucy” took place. The film will follow Lucy and Desi until Friday when the episode is filmed in front of an audience.
This week isn’t just about filming the beloved sitcom, though. There will be drama that will come into the beloved stars’ lives. This drama threatens both their marriage and their careers.
The process of making “Being The Ricardos” was a learning experience for Aaron Sorkin and company. For example, he learned something about Lucille Ball he never knew. “I was certainly intrigued that Lucille Ball has been accused of being a communist, which I didn’t know,” Sorkin also said.
“Being The Ricardos” will be released in theaters first on Dec. 10. Then, on Dec. 21, it will become available on Amazon Prime Video.
In addition to Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, the cast also includes J.K. Simmons and Nina Arianda. Simmons will play actor William Frawley. Frawley, of course, played Fred Mertz in “I Love Lucy.’ Arianda will play Vivian Vance. Vance played Ethel Mertz in the famous sitcom.
