Being the Ricardos star Nicole Kidman said she felt “relief” that Lucille Ball’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz, was so supportive of the casting. When it was announced that Kidman would play Lucille Ball in the upcoming Aaron Sorkin film, the internet was not happy.
There’ve been multiple criticisms about Kidman being the casting choice. Many people are mad that she’s not a comedian. Others aren’t happy because they look nothing alike. But Aaron Sorkin and Lucie Arnaz have defended the choice to cast her.
“It’s been a huge, huge relief because it’s her parents and we wanted to honor them but we wanted to show them with their flaws,” she said in a recent panel. “Javier had his own conversations with her. She was very supportive of us. She wanted us to play the roles.”
Not only does Arnaz support Nicole Kidman in the role, but she fired back at critics in a video message. In it, Arnaz discussed how people seem to think her mother was simply an extension of the character she played.
This is at the expense of viewing Lucille Ball as her own individual.
Lucie Arnaz Fired Back when the ‘Being the Ricardos’ Star Recieved Criticism
Even with Arnaz’s defense of Kidman, criticism has continued still. Of course, fans will have to wait until the movie actually comes out before making their actual final conclusions.
“There seems to be a lot of discussion about ‘Nicole Kidman, it should be Debra Messing, it should be Carole Cook,’ I don’t know,” she said. But she also noted that the movie is not about the show. “Here’s the deal, what you should understand: We are not doing a remake of ‘I Love Lucy.’ No one has to impersonate Lucy Ricardo nor do the Vitameatavegamin routine or … any of the silly things.”
She couldn’t be more right. Being the Ricardos takes a look at Lucille Ball’s tumultuous behind-the-scenes marriage with Desi Arnaz. The actress behind the camera couldn’t be farther from the character she was portraying at many points.
“It’s the story of Lucille Ball, my actual mother, not Lucy Ricardo and her husband Desi Arnaz, my dad, not Ricky Ricardo,” she continued. And for Arnaz, someone like Nicole Kidman was a great choice. “I don’t think you will be disappointed” with how it will play out.”
It looks like that may pan out. At least with critics, because critics who’ve gotten to see the film in early screenings have reported back that Nicole Kidman absolutely Dazzled in the role and could be a major Oscars contender.
So, hopefully, concerns on the behalf of the angry Twitter users are going to be put to rest. That’s if they actually see Being The Ricardos. Being The Ricardos comes out on December 10th.
