‘Beverly Hillbillies’: Max Baer Jr. and Sharon Tate Were Close, Latter Appeared on Show Several Times

by Clayton Edwards

Max Baer Jr. is the last surviving member of the Beverly Hillbillies cast. The world knows him as Jethro Bodine. In fact, many of his friends know him as Jethro.

After the show ended, he found his acting career hampered by typecasting. Everyone saw him as the hungry, dim-witted hillbilly. So, he took to writing, producing, and directing films. He also acted in some of his own movies. However, one of the most interesting things about him may be the friends he made along the way.

In a 2017 interview with Fore, the former Beverly Hillbillies star talked about his life after the show and some of his more famous friends. Among those famous friends was actress Sharon Tate.

The Former Beverly Hillbillies Star Talks About Sharon Tate

Tate was an up-and-coming actress in the sixties. However, her life was cut short by the Manson Family in 1969. She was only in a handful of movies and television shows. Most notably, she starred in the 1967 film Valley of the Dolls. She also appeared alongside Max Bear Jr. in 15 episodes of Beverly Hillbillies.

Baer took Tate to the Emmy Awards one year, according to the article in Fore. When she came up in the conversation, he spoke fondly of her. At one point, he mentioned that he had recently participated in a retrospective show on Tate’s all-too-short life and career. During that show, they asked him if Sharon Tate could act. He thought that was ludicrous.

Max Baer Jr. doesn’t shy away from talking about Sharon Tate. In an old daytime TV interview, Baer said that she was terrific. Baer also said that he was lucky enough to take Tate out a couple of times. On the official Sharon Tate website, Baer is quoted as saying. “When I first met Sharon on the set of The Beverly Hillbillies, I thought she was the prettiest girl I had ever seen. Sharon was terrific and I support her for a star on Hollywood Boulevard.”

Max Baer Jr. met and spent time with some incredibly famous people because of his time on The Beverly Hillbillies. However, his idol was always his father. Max Baer Sr. was a heavyweight champion boxer. He was such a force to be reckoned with in the ring that he actually killed another boxer.

However, it wasn’t his father’s prowess in the ring that the Beverly Hillbillies star cared about. Instead, it was the fact that he was a great dad. Max Baer Jr. said that he didn’t look up to his father as a fighter but as a person. In the end, they were buddies. In fact, he didn’t have children because he worried that he wouldn’t be as good of a father to his own kids as Baer Sr. was to him.
