‘Blue Bloods’ Star Bridget Moynahan Explains Why Her Show Family is ‘So Important’

“Blue Bloods” is viewed by some as just another cop show. However, it is much more than that. At its core, the popular CBS series is about family. The Reagan family, to be exact.

The show’s focus on family is not lost on its cast, including star Bridget Moynahan. She plays Erin Reagan, an assistant district attorney in Manhattan and the daughter of Tom Selleck’s character, New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan.

Just before the season finale of the 11th season of “Blue Bloods” aired during May 2021, Moynahan talked about family on “The Talk.” And while the Reagan family and their often complicated relationships drive the show, the cast of the show has become a family behind the scenes, according to the actress.

“The Talk” cohost Amanda Kloots brought up the topic of family on “Blue Bloods.” She was familiar with how the cast and crew interacted because her late husband, Nick Cordero, had been a guest star on the show prior to his death.

Cordero passed away due to complications from COVID-19 on July 5, 2020, in Los Angeles, California. He was only 41 years old at the time of his death. He had fought the disease for almost 100 days before it claimed his life.

“It’s such a special show for me because my late husband, Nick (Cordero) got to do a couple of episodes as Victor Lugo with Donnie (Wahlberg),” Kloots said of “Blue Bloods.” “He would always come home and always talk about the family there, and the cast and the crew and how kind everyone was. … He would just wait by the phone to get called back to come in again. And he was always so excited because of that family. How important is that?”

Actress Bridget Moynahan Said Cast Of ‘Blue Bloods’ Was ‘Blessed From Day One’

Bridget Moynahan then went on to describe how the love and support of her “Blue Bloods” family have helped each of them. In fact, this love and support have been part of their dynamic since they began filming the show more than a decade ago.

“It’s so important and we have been so blessed from day one. When we met on the pilot we had our first day all together at the family dinner. We fell into those roles on and off screen,” Moynahan said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the cast of “Blue Bloods” spent a lot of time on hiatus. According to Moynahan, this was a sad time for the actors.

“We really rely on each other, just for that support, on and off the screen,” she shared.

Moynahan also had kind words to say about Nick Cordero.

“I never got to work with Nick,” she said. “But Donnie only had the most beautiful things to say about him. So obviously we were always with you in that journey with that and sending you some love.”

“Blue Bloods” will be coming back for its 12th season. That season should debut at some point during the second half of 2021.
