‘Blue Bloods’: Eddie Grows Closer to New Partner in Recent Episode

In Friday’s Blue Bloods episode, “Reality Check,” Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray) got closer to her new partner, Luis Badillo (Ian Quinlan). We learned why Badillo is so difficult and runs through so many partners. And Eddie had a bit of a breakthrough with the notoriously prickly Badillo.

Eddie and Badillo were pushed together by Eddie’s husband and boss, Jamie Reagan (Will Estes). But Jamie wouldn’t tell either partner why he thought they’d work well together, just that he thought they could learn from each other.

As PopCulture explains, it turned out Badillo was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from the death of one of his previous partners. Once Eddie found that out from Jamie, she was more forgiving of Badillo’s quirks.

She dragged Badillo to a street corner named for his dead partner and told him he’d need to be able to get along with her to do his job. Then she explained that she’d helped Jamie recover after his partner died. She and Badillo needed to respect each other and work together or they’d both end up dead, she added. This seemed to finally register with Badillo.

‘Blue Bloods’ Characters Are Like ‘Oil and Water,’ Estes Says

It’s always a tough guess to figure out which people work best together in high-stress situations. Jamie took a shot at pairing Eddie and Badillo, but so far, their partnership has been more combustible than compatible.

“He thought they would complement each other,” Estes told TV Line of his character’s decision. “But they’re like oil and water. Later, that will come to a head.”

It remains to be seen if Eddie and Badillo can build a rapport from that brief moment of understanding in Friday’s episode. But given the nature of their jobs, both their lives may depend on it.

Vanessa Ray Says Tom Selleck Makes Everyone’s Performances Better

While Tom Selleck, who plays NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, has not gotten involved in the Eddie-Badillo scenes directly, he has helped to make the other actors’ performances better, Ray said.

In a September interview with PopCulture, Ray described how Selleck brings other actors’ performances up a notch with his subtle pointers on set.

“He’s a total actor’s actor,” Ray said. “So he would never give anybody notes, but he’ll give you like a, ‘You know, I was thinking that I was going to do it this way, and I wonder how your character would react if I did something this way.’ Sort of like leading the way. And you’re like, ‘Oh yeah. A better idea than I had. Much better idea than I had. Okay. You’re right. You’re right.’ So he’s fun to work with.”

Selleck even worked on a scene he didn’t appear in, helping Ray and co-star Lauren Patton to read through the scene and later editing it himself. The end result was “like a masterpiece,” Ray said.
