Vanessa Ray has been playing Eddie Janko on “Blue Bloods” since 2013. She started as Jamie Reagan’s partner, and now she’s Jamie Reagan’s wife. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing along the way. The Reagan family has a few traditions that Janko had to experience before she was fully on board. And apparently, the cast does a little friendly fun-poking off-screen as well.
Anyone familiar with “Blue Bloods” must also be familiar with the Reagan family dinner. Every week, the family gathers around the table to share a meal and talk about what’s going on in their lives. In recent years, that tradition has been extended to Vanessa Ray’s Eddie Janko. As the newest member of the family, she is a natural target for practical jokes and the like.
“Non-stop. They just really love to razz me,” Vanessa Ray said.
“It’s especially fun for me when she’s having a hard time. So we enjoyed the code blue,” Will Estes added.
Fans of “Blue Bloods” will remember the scene well. It’s a rite of passage for any new member of the family. The “code blue” is called when it looks like things are getting serious between a Reagan and a prospective Reagan. You can watch Vanessa Ray’s Janko try her best to navigate the minefield that is a Reagan family dinner scene below.
Fortunately, both Vanessa Ray and Eddie Janko are well-equipped to stave off the attempts to fluster her. In the scene, she asserts her identity and won’t be trampled by anyone. To include Tom Selleck’s Commissioner Frank Reagan. Jamie has never looked more proud of her when all is said and done.
Why Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan is Such a Force on ‘Blue Bloods’
If you were paying attention, you’d know that it was Donnie Wahlberg’s character who called the code blue on Eddie Janko. That’s no coincidence. It goes hand in hand with the nature of Danny Reagan.
Danny represents the third generation of cops in the Reagan family. Both Len Cariou’s Henry Reagan and currently Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan have been the Police Commissioner. Now, it’s not an inherited position. But if it were, Danny Reagan would be next in line for the throne. And throughout “Blue Bloods,” he behaves accordingly.
While he has no illusions of himself ever becoming the Commissioner, Donnie Wahlberg’s character keeps that chip on his shoulder nonetheless.
“Danny has to be hardheaded and fiery in front of Frank. I had to be willing to do that in front of Tom. Any good actor would know that’s what you have to do—you commit,” Wahlberg told CBS Watch! in 2019.
