The “Blue Bloods” season 11 finale left us with lots of twists and turns. Spoiler alert: First we saw the return of the late Jo Reagan’s son Joe Hill. Fans thought Joe had gone rogue when he disappeared for months. But his return proved that he is a true Reagan family member.

The show revealed that Joe had been working undercover with some gun runners working on behalf of the ATF. If that wasn’t enough of a twist, fans also discovered that both Frank and Jamie knew about Joe’s undercover work. But they hid it from the rest of the family. As things became more dangerous for Joe in the undercover world, the whole family worked together to keep Joe safe without blowing his cover. A lot went down over the course of the episodes, lots of action, interwoven storylines and excitement. And, of course, it all ended with a heartwarming family dinner.

However, what fans may not have known was that both of the season finale episodes were written with the intention of them possibly being the series finales. During an interview, “Blue Bloods” EP Kevin Wade revealed that he and his writing team thought the season finale would be the final episodes of “Blue Bloods” ever.

“One is we were told pretty early on, I think before Thanksgiving that our season finale would be the last two episodes and would air back to back which I immediately took as they’re planning to wrap up the series …” said Wade.

So Wade had extra work on his hands. He had to wrap up the season. But he also had to write an episode that could conclude 11 years of “Blue Bloods.”

“Yeah, so I started to think about how do we do something that could serve as a season finale but also if need be as a series finale,” said Wade.

So, Wade created a beautiful full-circle moment that tied the finale back to season one.

“We went back to the end of the first season where all the Reagans became involved in finding out and catching and bringing to justice the bad cops who killed Joe Reagan. Who is of course, Joe Hill’s father,” said Wade. “And it was kind of a callback to that. Just in case it was a series finale it would have a circle to it.”

Wade added that the entire finale was written, filmed and aired before the team knew whether or not “Blue Bloods” would return for another season.

“So it was that, and then we went into this,” said Wade. “We wrote it and we filmed most of it. In fact, I think we filmed all of it before we knew if we were coming back or not.”
