Reagan family dinner scenes are some of “Blue Bloods” fans’ favorites to watch. The table setting puts the entire family in one place and lets them discuss the events surrounding an episode. But as entertaining as these scenes are to watch, the consensus among the cast is that filming them can be a bit of a grind. Especially when considering that the wine and scotch the cast is drinking isn’t wine or scotch at all.
The cast seems to have a love-hate relationship with the family dinner scenes. They love the fact that everyone is spending time together. But the eight-plus hours of eating the same food over and over again take their toll. And this is not a particularly new revelation. Cast members on “The Waltons” had similar complaints about how grueling the dinner process can be.
Exhausting as filming a Reagan family dinner is, you’d think the “Blue Bloods” cast would at least be able to relax a little with a glass of wine. But Danny Reagan actor Donnie Wahlberg talked about how the prop team keeps them dead sober on set.
“Someone asked me if we get drunk because we have a lot of wine during the dinner scene, but, sadly, it’s just grape juice,” Wahlberg told People in 2013. “Sorry, guys. And ‘Scotch’ is iced tea. I think they give us decaffeinated or we’d be bouncing off the walls.”
It’s obviously for the best. A table full of drunk “Blue Bloods” actors would make for a much more drawn-out filming process. It would definitely provide some temporary fun. But it would get old really quickly.
Blue Bloods Coming Back For Another Season
Speaking of things getting old, the long-running show created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess was renewed for a 12th season in April. The CBS-produced crime drama has been on the air since 2010, and after a few dips in ratings, the prospects for “Blue Bloods” are looking up. The 11th season just came to an end this month. And a rerun of the finale episode showed better ratings than the majority of network television.
It’s an impressive run for any show. And the long tenure has no doubt been helped along by veteran “Magnum P.I.” actor Tom Selleck. At 76 years old, the Frank Reagan actor is still going strong and is still sporting perhaps the most iconic TV mustache of all time. Helped along by the likes of Bridget Moynahan and Donnie Wahlberg, the Reagan family of “Blue Bloods” will entertain audiences for at least one more year.
