When it comes to fame, Donnie Wahlberg is no slouch. Wahlberg has been in the public eye since the 1980s. He was one of the founding members of The New Kids on the Block. They have widely been credited with starting the boy band trend. In fact, without them, we wouldn’t have had ‘N Sync or the Backstreet Boys. However, Wahlberg is more than just a musician. He also has a long and successful acting career. Wahlberg was in The Sixth Sense, the Saw films, and Band of Brothers among many other things. He also works behind the scenes on Boston’s Finest. However, most people recognize him from his current role. He plays Danny Reagan on Blue Bloods.

Donnie Wahlberg started that role in 2010. After four years of acting on the series, he decided to try his hand at directing an episode. He once said that becoming a director on the show was a natural progression. After all, the show is about an NYPD family. At the same time, it deals with many aspects of police work. Wahlberg works with law enforcement on a regular basis. So, he was definitely right for the job. However, even with his impressive resume and skillset, the cast of Blue Bloods is packed with stars.

The biggest name on the show is Tom Selleck. He is an icon of the large and small screen. Selleck has been in the business for decades. In that time, he has starred in some of the coolest TV shows and films. Donnie Wahlberg got the pleasure of directing the icon in a 2014 episode of Blue Bloods.

Back in 2014, Donnie Wahlberg talked to Entertainment Tonight about transitioning to the director’s chair. At one point during that interview, Wahlberg discussed what it was like to direct Tom Selleck on Blue Bloods.

Donnie Wahlberg on Directing Tom Selleck

Donnie Wahlberg said that directing on Blue Bloods came naturally. On the other hand, he still found it a little daunting.

The really tough thing about directing Blue Bloods for Donnie Wahlberg was directing Tom Selleck. About this, Wahlberg said, “Tom’s a TV legend and he’s a good actor. He’s smart, he knows the business as good as anyone.” Donnie went on to say that Selleck, “Knows when it’s BS and when it’s not.” So, he knew going in that he had to bring his A-game if he was going to direct a massive star like Selleck.

Donnie Wahlberg went on to say that he thought he was ready to direct in season one. However, he wanted to take a few years and really a feel for the show, its characters, and most importantly, its cast. This is because he wanted to be 100 percent sure he was capable of directing the cast before saying, “cut,” to Tom Selleck.
