‘Blue Bloods’: How the Series Keeps a ‘Family-Like’ Atmosphere On-Set

by Joe Rutland

One of the best parts of “Blue Bloods” is how each episode focuses on family. It’s no wonder that the same vibe is on the set, too.

Tom Selleck, who plays NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on the CBS crime drama, said that being a family is important during a 2017 cast interview with 92nd Street Y.

“We’ve become a family, I think you can see that beyond just what the show is,” he said. “You can do an hour episodic show with this big of a cast and you may not see your fellow actors for 2-3 weeks, [a] month maybe. [On] this show, we see each other every eight days because that’s how long it takes for us to shoot an episode. And I really look forward to seeing Frank’s family and my family.”

‘Blue Bloods’ Emphasizes Family Element With Episodes’ Dinner Scenes

“Blue Bloods” has been on CBS for 11 seasons. Besides Selleck, other cast members include Bridget Moynahan, Donnie Wahlberg, Will Estes, Len Cariou, and Sami Gayle.

A lot of the show’s fans can truly identify with Selleck’s comments. The show takes special care to emphasize the role of family with its dinner scenes. It is a time in pretty much each episode where family members gather to eat, talk, and even have a few laughs.

But there’s always a sense of wisdom being spread around the dinner table. It might be from Frank or “Pops” [Cariou]. It might be from one of the younger kids there, too. The scenes themselves not only bring “Blue Bloods” actors together; it also gives the show’s fans a way to connect at a deeper level.

One specific dinner scene, though, pretty much freaked Gayle out.

Nicky Reagan Actress Found Herself In Precarious Spot With Meatballs

In “Blue Bloods,” Gayle plays Nicky Reagan. This particular scene takes place during the show’s early seasons when Gayle was a regular on the CBS drama. See, the problem for Nicky was that she was being asked to eat meatballs in the dinner scene. She was balking and wouldn’t do it.

That changed, though, when the episode’s director tells Gayle, as Nicky, to take a bite out of the meatballs. One of Nicky’s younger cousins, though, sneezed right on her dish. Yep, the dish with the meatballs. Like a good sport, Gayle goes through with the scene.

“Then, as soon as they yelled ‘Cut,'” Gayle said, “Bridget handed me a napkin. She was like, ‘Spit it out, spit it out.’ And I was like, ‘That’s my mom.'”

Moynahan plays Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan, Nicky’s mom, on the show. Prior to playing Nicky, Gayle made her TV debut through three appearances as Hayden Lawson in 2009-10 on the CBS daytime soap opera “As The World Turns.”
