‘Blue Bloods’: How Will the Upcoming Season 12 Look Different?

by Anna Dunn

Blue Bloods just finished season 11 with an action-packed finale. The show, which follows Frank Reagan and his family, was renewed despite some dips in ratings. In fact, showrunner Kevin Wade thought the show was going to be canceled. So how will season 12 spice things up?

First, some are speculating that Blue Bloods is nearing its end. With a gradual decline in ratings and over a decade on air, it may be time for the procedural to come to a close. Last year’s ratings declined 16% from Season 10, which declined from season 9. That doesn’t mean season 12 will be its last, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Will Two ‘Blue Bloods’ Characters Finally Get Together?

Some fans are wondering if there is hope for Blue Bloods investigators Danny and Baez. Many believe the two have feelings for each other, but showrunner Kevin Wade doesn’t want to get people’s hopes up. The two are partners first.

“I’m gonna use Sam and Diane from Cheers and really age myself here, but once it happens, there’s nowhere to go,” he told TV Insider. “There really aren’t stories in happy couples and there are definitely not stories in police detectives on the job having a personal relationship with their partner.”

While he said they could get other partners, that would take up a lot of time on the show, so it’s not likely season 12 will see a new romance between the two.

Jamie and Eddie Can Expect Big Career Moves

Other Blue Bloods characters may face some big career changes. Jamie and Eddie are both trying to thrive in their careers.

“For now, we’re just gonna play probably Jamie’s promotion,” Wade said in another TV Insider interview. He talked about how, if the show had six more years, we’d find Jamie even farther up the career ladder, not necessarily commissioner, but something close to it.

Meanwhile, exciting things may happen for Eddie as well.

“Every time we’ve played her undercover, it brightens up the screen. It’s on the table that Eddie could become a detective,” Wade teased. Some have wondered if kids are in the future for the couple, even as soon as the upcoming season.

But when it comes to their personal lives, it’s hard to tell. The two are in very exciting points in their careers, and it may not be the right time for kids.

“We talk about it sometimes. I think that would be something that would come out of a combination of our fictional lives and their real lives,” Wade said.

Blue Bloods is on CBS’s upcoming fall schedule, so you won’t have to wait long before being reunited with your favorite characters. Other highly anticipated shows on CBS’s fall lineup include the FBI series and the shows in the NCIS franchise.
