Anyone who watches “Blue Bloods” knows that Maria Baez is not afraid to kick ass on the show. But so does real-life actor Marisa Ramirez, who loves kickboxing.
Earlier this year, Ramirez spoke to PopCulture about her history in film and television, as well as what she did before becoming an actress. Apparently, Ramirez has done kickboxing throughout most of her life and even taught kickboxing classes for six years. These lessons only give her more strength and a commanding presence onscreen as a New York detective.
“There’s always been this kind of bossy quality, strength, power, woman of power sort of thing,” the “Blue Bloods” star told the outlet. “Maybe I just like to yell at people, and maybe I was good at that.” Ramirez was also a drill team captain, at one point.
But knowing how to kick ass doesn’t mean the “Blue Bloods” star immediately started out in those roles. In fact, Ramirez got her start in the industry by becoming a model and MTV host. She then starred in shows like “General Hospital,” “Miracles,” “The Young and the Restless,” and “Against the Wall.” But after a while, even before coming on to “Blue Bloods,” Ramirez started getting more cop and detective parts.
“It’s kind of like my work was going in phases a little bit,” Ramirez said. “There was a phase where I was the crying girlfriend. It was the sad girlfriend. It was like a bunch of guest star roles that was happening for a little while. Then maybe something happened in my personal life, where I just kind of evolved as a person and found some strength that was being seen in these casting rooms, and I just kept being cast as a cop.”
‘Blue Bloods’ Star Donnie Wahlberg Makes Marisa Ramirez Try a ‘Wahlburger’
A fun fact about “Blue Bloods” star Donnie Wahlberg: He owns a restaurant chain with his brothers Mark and Paul. Wahlburgers locations are all over the country, so Donnie couldn’t believe it when his own co-star admitted she’d never had one.
“You never had a Wahlburger,” Wahlberg asked Marisa Ramirez in a clip from the family’s A&E series. “You lying! … There’s one in Coney Island. You never had a Wahlburger, ever?”
Wahlberg decides he has to dos something about it. So he asks his family for help, and his mom sends his nephew, Brandon, down to the “Blue Bloods” set with an entire “Wahlburger” food truck.
Ramirez can’t believe all this effort just so she can try the famous burger. “A whole truck! Your mom’s the coolest,” Ramirez exclaims.
While we don’t get to see the actress try the burger, Wahlberg does share how much it meant to share his family business with the show’s crew.
“Seeing all the crew’s happy faces today and seeing Marisa so happy, it makes me really grateful to my mom, and especially grateful to Brandon for coming through like only family can,” he said.
