Marisa Ramirez never was supposed to be more than a temporary character on Blue Bloods. Writers created five episodes for Maria Baez. And that was it.
That was back in 2013. More than 180 episodes later, Ramirez still is a vital part of the Blue Bloods cast. She’s the partner of Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg), the oldest son of NYC commissioner Frank Reagan.
Back in 2013, when she still was so new to the show, Ramirez said she didn’t know much about her character. Who did, since Baez was supposed to come and go.
The year she joined the cast, Ramirez was honest about her character. She didn’t know much about her roots.
“Honestly, I have no idea because when I first came on they never really gave me the back story,” the Blue Bloods star told TV Fanatic. “I think they didn’t even know if they were going to have me back for more. All I know is there is a history between Maria and Danny.”
So On Blue Bloods, What’s the Deal with Danny and Maria?
So what sort of history is there between the two characters?
“They’ve known each other for 10 years,” Ramirez said. “I am not sure how. I imagine they worked patrol together, but it’s nice. They have a little banter back and forth because of their history. I know she’s single because I’m not wearing a ring on the show. She’s from New York. She’s just a chick solving crimes, sort of thing, with Danny. They work well together.”
That’s a good description — a “chick solving crimes.” After all, crimes are what Blue Bloods do. Eight years later, there isn’t a ton known about Maria, other than she and Danny have been friends for even longer. She initially worked on a joint robbery task force with the FBI. But Frank Reagan disbanded the task force.
Her family includes a mother and a brother. When she was 10, she witnessed the murder of a neighborhood kid. Years later, she helped solve the crime and bring a drug lord to justice.
Star of ER Guests in Friday’s Episode as Frank’s Old Friend
Fans of Blue Bloods get a new episode this Friday. It’s called “Firewall.” And yes, there will be a chunk of the plot devoted to Danny and Maria. According to CBS’ plot summary, “Frank enlists the help of an old friend, Sloane Thompson (Alex Kingston), to investigate a cyber-attack on the NYPD that forces Danny and Baez to release an evasive suspect. Also, Baez questions her place within the NYPD. Eddie is torn over a workplace dilemma. And Jamie wrestles with a family secret.”
Thompson first appeared as a character on Blue Bloods in 2016. And now she’s returning five years later. If you’re a fan of 1990s-era network medical dramas, you probably recognize Alex Kingston, who is portraying Thompson. Kingston starred on ER as Dr. Elizabeth Corday. She’s also played a recurring character on Law & Order: SVU.
