Len Cariou is an impressive actor who most recently displayed his talent on Blue Bloods. His wife, Heather Summerhayes, is also an incredibly impressive person. The two have been married for 35 years.
Summerhayes is an award-winning stage actress as well as a ballerina, ethnographer, and author. The inspiring jack of all trades is known for The Wars (1983) and Another Day Gone By (2015).
She’s also the author of SixtyFive Roses, a Sister’s Memoir, which has been optioned for a film by Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria. She also co-founded the Galaxy Writers Workshop in New Jersey.
The couple enjoys going to the theatre together in their spare time. The two live together in New Jersey. That makes it easy for Cariou to head into New York to film Blue Bloods. It also allows Summerhayes to work on the Writer’s workshop.
Cariou Got His Start Long Before ‘Blue Bloods’
Cariou plays Henry “Pop” Reagan on the hit series, but the 81-year-old actor got his start on Broadway decades ago. The actor was a part of the original cast of two Stephen Sondheim musicals in the 1970s: A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Cariou earned a Tony for his Sweeny Todd performance. He has starred alongside actresses such as Angela Lansberry and Elizabeth Taylor. Even while on Blue Bloods, the actor can’t stay away from the stage. Recently Cariou starred in and produced a one-man show titled Broadway & The Bard An Evening of Shakespeare and Song.
Cariou’s Current Co-Stars Admire his Work
With decades of acting experience under his belt, Cariou’s co-stars seriously look up to him.
“Sat at the table I’m surrounded by a lot of talent,” Jamie Reagan actor Will Estes said in a 2017 interview with Taylor Magazine. “Len Cariou to my right is such a great actor and film actor as well.”
Nicki Reagan actress Sami Gayle‘s favorite episode of the entire series is one where she got to work closely with Cariou. In fact, the fact that she got to work with Cariou is the reason she loves the episode so much. The season 2 episode features Nicki and Pop performing at a talent shot.
“Pop and I got to participate, we got to participate together in a talent show where we sang ‘I Don’t Need Anything But You,” Gayle once explained. I Don’t Need Anything But You is from the Broadway musical, Annie.
She described Cariou as “one of the most talented, well-known, renowned Broadway actors. And I started my career on Broadway and it was so special to be able to sing with him on screen.”
If you’re excited to see Cariou and the rest of the Blue Bloods cast, there’s not much longer to wait before the series returns in the fall. You can catch season 12, episode 1 on Friday, October 1st on CBS.
