“Blue Bloods” actress Sami Gayle, who plays Nicky Reagan-Boyle, has a favorite episode of the long-running CBS police drama.

“Pop and I got to participate, we got to participate together in a talent show where we sang ‘I Don’t Need Anything But You,” Gayle said of the episode called “The Life We Chose.” That particular song, she said, is from the Broadway musical “Annie.”
“And Len Cariou, who plays Pop, is just one of the most talented, well-known, renowned Broadway actors,” she said. “And I started my career on Broadway and it was so special to be able to sing with him on screen.”
Cariou plays retired NYPD Commissioner Henry Reagan. He usually can be found at the Reagan dinner table, where many issues either get settled or talked out.
The CBS drama, which stars Tom Selleck as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, will come back in the fall for its 12th season. Gayle was a main character on the show between the second and 10th seasons. This past season, though, she made a guest appearance in the season finale.
Whether she comes back to “Blue Bloods” or not in a full-time capacity waits to be seen.
‘Blue Bloods’ Stars Avoid Getting Drunk During Those Dinner Scenes
Obviously, “Blue Bloods” centers a lot of their episodes at the dinner table. It’s a place where everyone can sit down for a meal as a family.
Cast members readily admit that they love them, yet also hate them at times, too. You do see a lot of wine and scotch passed around there, too. The filming of these scenes can be tiresome and the booze isn’t even real.
Actor Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Danny Reagan, talked about the “Blue Bloods” prop team keeping the stars stone-cold sober on their set.
“Someone asked me if we get drunk because we have a lot of wine during the dinner scene, but, sadly, it’s just grape juice,” Wahlberg told People in 2013. “Sorry, guys. And ‘Scotch’ is iced tea. I think they give us decaffeinated or we’d be bouncing off the walls.”
We’re talking about actors here, so they probably know how to play a character who’s had too much booze. But “Blue Bloods” fans find themselves drawn into the dinner scenes. They feel connected to the show. The stars, especially Selleck, say it’s great to have the fans connected, too.
“There is an evolution,” Selleck said in a 2020 interview with People. “It started out as a character-driven show, and it’s even more than that now. When you get to a point like this, and we certainly had it on [Magnum P.I.], the audience is really inside the main characters’ heads.”
