‘Blue Bloods’: The ‘Romantic’ Story of How Tom Selleck Met His Wife Jillie Joan Mack

by Megan Molseed

“We’re both independent. There is a lot of yin and yang in us,” actor Tom Selleck said of his relationship with wife Jillie Joan Mack.

From career highs and lows, raising a daughter together, and building their very own avocado farm, Tom Selleck and his wife, Jillie has built a successful marriage spanning over three decades. According to a recent article in Closer Weekly, Tom Selleck notes that one key to his and Jillie’s successful marriage is making sure to put each other first. And to keep the relationship alive.

“I get up before Jillie and put on the teakettle, so when she gets up, her tea water is hot,” Tom Selleck said. “I think I’m pretty romantic.”

Tom Selleck Is Not Always The Suave Ladies Man He Has Portrayed

The couple met in London during a performance of the wildly popular musical “Cats.” Jillie was playing the role of Rumpleteazer in the hit production. According to Tom Selleck, he was incredibly shy at the time. Especially since his marriage to his first wife, Jaqueline Ray ended in 1982.

“I was hemming and hawing, and she finally asked, ‘Do you want to meet for a cocktail?’” the actor recalled. The couple tied the knot in 1987.

The wedding was performed in secret, according to a Country Living article. Tom Selleck’s brother arranged all the details in a Lake Tahoe, Nevada chapel. The couple used the aliases Tom Jenkins and Suzie Mark. It was reported that even the minister didn’t know who he would be marrying until minutes before the August 7, 1987 service.

Jillie joined the “Blue Bloods” star in the United States while Selleck finished shooting his hit CBS series “Magnum PI.” A year later, Jillie Mack and Tom Selleck welcomed a daughter, Hannah. It was at this point that the “Three Men and a Baby” star decided it was time to take a break from his acting career.

An Easy Life on The Ranch

Tom Selleck and Jillie decided to try their hand at something unique purchasing a 65-acre Ventura County ranch.

“He knew he needed to buy back his anonymity, to replenish the soul,” Jillie explained of Tom Selleck’s move.

The couple grows a variety of plants on the ranch and raises a menagerie of animals. However, the ranch’s primary purpose according to the couple is as an avocado farm.

While he is home at their ranch, Selleck works hard on the day-to-day operations. The couple does maintain they are a solid team, however. When Tom Selleck is off shooting his latest hit drama series, “Blue Bloods,” Jillie takes over most of the chores.

“This is a different deal than Magnum,” Selleck said. “I don’t love the commute, but that’s OK. I don’t work every day. I’ve got a job right now that I love.”

Tom Selleck added that it is the partnership he and Jillie have that makes their relationship work so well.

“Relationships are tricky, but if you are in love with somebody and like them, you’ve got a chance at success. “You become true partners,” the “Blue Bloods” star said. “Apart from being my wife, she’s my friend.”
