“Blue Bloods” stars Donnie Wahlberg and Tom Selleck have played a father-son duo on the hit CBS crime drama for more than ten years. In that time, Wahlberg has learned a thing or two about what it’s like to work with Selleck as an actor and as a director.
On-screen, Wahlberg plays NYPD Detective Danny Reagan, the oldest son of seasoned police commissioner Frank Regan (played by Selleck). Back in 2013, Wahlberg also played a prominent role off-screen when he directed one “Blue Bloods” season four episode.
When Wahlberg sat down with the hosts of the CBS talk show “The Talk” in 2013, he opened up about the struggles of the directing role.
Donnie Wahlberg’s Thoughts on Directing ‘Blue Bloods’
“I’m a little nervous. I’m gonna be directing the first episode after Christmas break, and I’m not really nervous to do the directing. I am just nervous to direct Tom Selleck,” the “Blue Bloods” star said with a laugh. “He is one of very few icons around. When people use the word ‘legend,’ they always throw it around a little loosely. He really is a legend.”
Directing a legend can be both an honor and a pain, especially when one is as “scary” as Tom Selleck.
“To say action, or you know, the first time I say, ‘Hey, Tom, can you just, you know, try it this way? It might be a little bit better…’ You know when he gives me that ‘stare’ with those eyebrows,” Wahlberg continued, laughing. “People talk about his mustache, but forget the mustache. It’s the eyebrows that are so scary.”
“Blue Bloods” viewers know that Selleck’s character Frank has used that ‘stare’ a time or two to intimidate others in the room. Many of us would also definitely not want to be on the receiving end of it.
Selleck’s scary stare aside, Wahlberg was happy to be working with the legendary actor. “He’s been encouraging me, and he’s been very helpful, so I look forward to it,” the “Blue Bloods” star said.

Tom Selleck Continues to Inspire Other Actors On Set
“Blue Bloods” star Will Estes also spoke on CBS’ “The Talk” back in 2012. Estes plays Frank Reagan’s youngest son and Danny Reagan’s little brother, Jamie.
Estes had nothing but great things to say about working with Selleck on the “Blue Bloods” set. In fact, Estes might even have been the tiniest bit starstruck.
“He’s incredible,” Estes said. “He’s such a professional and he’s so studied. He knows his character so well.”
Estes continued, “[Selleck] could write, produce, and direct that show, and he maintains he just wants to act in it. But, you know, when you work with him, you can just see how good he is at what he does. So it’s a treat every day.”
