In a 2019 interview with CBS, Vanessa Ray recalls the time when Tom Selleck was in a Blue Bloods makeup trailer with her when he asked if she has ever been in the military. “I said, ‘Um no, Tom Selleck, have you?’ He said, ‘Yes. Do you know how to salute or stand at attention?’”
Ray then says her Blue Bloods castmate then made her stand up and stand at attention correctly.
“He said, ‘Do it again! Don’t look at me!’ He kept making salute him and stand at attention.” She admits she learned more in the trailer that day just about how to stand than anything else she’d ever done.
Vanessa Ray Shares Thoughts About Blue Bloods Famous Family Dinners
Also during the interview with CBS, Vanessa Ray discusses being a part of the Blue Bloods’ well-known family dinner scenes.
“I feel like I had to learn how to act those scenes from [my character] Eddie,” Vanessa explains. She also says that her first reaction being at those dinner table scenes with “legends” was to be scared. “I would walk in and my confidence level was shook.”
Vanessa then discusses what it was like to learn how to cuff and hold a gun for her Blue Bloods role. “I had never held a gun or cuffed someone, so I felt really out of my body when I first started this job. I didn’t expect that.”
Ray then says she thought she would be able to adapt easily to the role. But then admits it took her a while to get the hang of things. “One of my first days on set, I was pointing a gun and someone walked by. My gut reaction was to use my hand to cover the barrel of then.”
In regards to her actual audition for the show, Vanessa recalls auditioning on tape and then met with CBS in LA. She then remembers how the casting director got stuck in an elevator and was unable to meet with her until the next day.
“Sometimes, as an actor, you’re like, ‘No! I’m ready right now and I don’t want to come back tomorrow. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow. But I know today I can get this job.’”
Vanessa adds that she waited on the CBS lot for two hours until the fire department arrived and got the director out of the elevator. “Then I was like, ‘Ready?’ And I got it,” she adds.
Blue Bloods is set to premiere its twelfth season on October 1, 2021. Ray and Selleck are set to return, along with Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, and Len Cariou.
