While playing “Blue Bloods” New York Police Department Sergeant Jamie Reagan, Will Estes seems to know exactly what he’s doing. However, the actor once noted that he had no idea how to play the character when he first joined the cast of the hit CBS series.
“By no means did I think I knew what I was doing out of the gate as an NYPD officer,” the actor said in a 2019 interview with CBS’s WATCH!
“I never want to act like I know,” the actor continued. Will Estes also noted that the show’s technical advisors have helped immensely since the show’s premiere in 2010.
For Estes, it is the help of these technical advisors, all of whom are former police officers, that have given the show its realistic quality. And, over the years, Estes noted, he has become better and better at portraying his Jamie Reagan character.
“Blue Bloods” Has Experts to Make Sure Things Are Just Right
“Jim was an NYPD cop for 23 years,” Will Estes said of the technical advisor he often works with. “I’ve enjoyed going to him. I ask him about everything.”
The “Blue Bloods” actor can now anticipate what the technical advisor will tell him. Sometimes even finishing the sentences before the helper can even complete the thought.
Estes remembered one moment when the advisor recommended he use a black pen to sign certain forms in a scene.
“Back in the day you could only write in black ink,” the actor said the expert explained. “Now you can write in any color, but Jamie would be old school. I liked that.”
The “Blue Bloods” actor may not have known much about the New York Police Department when he joined the series, but he did know a few pieces that could help him in the role.
“I had the advantage of having played a Marine once, and there are a lot of similarities, with ex-military becoming police officers,” explained Estes.
“I was comfortable with firearms, but by no means did I think I knew what I was doing out of the gate as an NYPD officer,” the “Blue Bloods” star continued.
Will Estes Feels A Closer Connection To His Character as the Series Progresses
Estes added that since the show’s premiere, he had become to feel more connected to his character and the challenges he and the rest of the characters face.
“Doing this job as long as I have, life is starting to imitate art,” Will Estes said of playing the “Blue Bloods” Sargeant.
“Maybe that’s why our show has gone for so long. There’s so much there at our fingertips in the real world that we can draw from,” he continued. “We’re doing a show about heroes and cops who get it right 99 percent of the time.”
