Just like people, characters can grow a lot over the years. And with 11 seasons under their belts, the characters on “Blue Bloods” have certainly grown a lot. During an interview in 2020, actor Will Estes, who plays Jamie Reagan on the show, talked about the evolution of his character. He said that, in a way, he and his character have grown together.
“You know I don’t know if it was art imitating life or how that works. But I was learning how to be a police officer for the role when we first started. And although Jamie came from a cop family, he was a rookie police officer and learning to be a police officer, right alongside me,” said Estes. “You know, now I feel like we’ve been doing it for a long time. Now, I feel like I have the ropes.”
Estes shared how he knows he’s grown since season one. He said that he has retained a lot of the knowledge that “Blue Bloods” technical advisor, James Nuciforo, has taught the cast. Nuciforo is a 24 year NYC Police officer and Detective, so he has a ton of experience and knowledge to share.
“Now sometimes I know the answer to what our incredible technical advisor James Nuciforo is going to say before he says it. And one of the biggest feathers in my cap is when I know what the answer is when he asks a question and he says, ‘Hey, look at you!’ That’s when I feel like I’ve done my homework,” said Estes. “But there’s still so much more to know that we rely on him for. But I feel like I know more about what I’m doing.”
Will Estes Reveals How Jamie Really Felt About His Promotion On ‘Blue Bloods’
In the same way, Jamie Reagan has also gotten the hang of his role as a police officer. Jamie started as a rookie in the police academy during season one. And he’s worked his way up since then. Most recently, Jamie landed a promotion after passing the sergeant’s test. During an interview in 2018, Will Estes talked about Jamie’s new role on “Blue Bloods.”
“He started very much a rookie,” said Estes. “Now, he’s a veteran who just made sergeant. I’m stepping into my training sergeant’s shoes, and I’m now in charge of other police officers. I’m one step up the ladder rung and in charge of other police officers and playing a boss.”
But just like everyone on the verge of change, Jamie had his reservations about taking the job. Estes also talked about how his character navigated those reservations.
“I heard it stated one time the police officer on the street is the only job position that puts you in a place where you actually can prevent crime. Everything else is getting the criminal who did it,” said Estes. “Jamie was hesitant to give that up. He heard his father, Frank Reagan, say things like, ‘If I had to do it all over again, I’d be right where you are.’ He might have meant that in a sentimental way, but I think that’s something Jamie took to heart, for better or worse.”
