Losing The Sopranos star James Gandolfini was extremely difficult. So many fans and castmates were devastated by his sudden loss years ago. Blue Bloods star Steve Schirripa opened up about how James Gandolfini’s death was a “knockout punch” for him.
In the interview with Bro Bible he said, “We were good friends. It took me for a loop. I never said, well what would happen if Jim Died, or one of your friends died, how would I feel? But, I got it. It was a knockout punch to me.”
Clearly, the two stars were close and his loss really hurt Schirripa.
‘Blue Bloods’ Star Steve Schirripa’s Time on ‘The Sopranos’
What a career for Stve Schirripa. He was not even a full-time actor when he got famous on the hit HBO show. It was a hobby for him at the time as he tells it. Still the character of Bobby was a hit.
Folks everywhere grew to love his character. He did not fit in with the rest of the cast on the show. Steve had a good heart and that’s fans were drawn to.
He told Esquire, “No one ever talked to me about the character. I just made my own choices from the writing; what I thought, who I thought this guy was. In my head I gave him a background, but no one ever said to me, now this guy is this, this, and this. I just went by instinct. I was a caretaker to Uncle Junior. Obviously I like to eat, just from the writing. As the years went on, the role got bigger and bigger. Bobby got a little smarter, or stepped up to the plate better. He was closer to Tony. But no one ever told me that’s who the guy was.”
How wild is that, Outsiders, that he figured out the character on his own. It’s funny how life works sometimes, but he made the right choices as it was a breakout role for him as an actor. Steve Schirripa began as a small figure next to Uncle Junior but he grew to become one of Tony’s most important allies near the end.
Bobby Bacala’s Stardom
He concluded, “That was my choice and I took that from the tremendous writing. And that’s how we got Bobby Bacala. He was a family guy. He’s the only one without a cumare [a mistress]. His wife died; you saw him at the coffin. Hopefully your heart breaks for this guy trying to raise his family. You know. Of course, he ate every chance he could get.”
Isn’t that something? Steve Schirripa built off the great writing from the team and turned Bobby into the iconic character that he became. You really loved the guy, especially for his love of family, and how emotional he was compared to the rest of the crew.
