Tom Selleck may play a police commissioner on the hit drama Blue Bloods, but he reveals the real boys in blue sometimes pay the actor the same respects.

Tom Selleck portrays Frank Reagan, the New York Police Commissioner, on the CBS series Blue Bloods. Reagan is a law enforcement legacy with long generational ties to the police force. With more than 230 episodes, the show, as well as the main actor, Tom Selleck, have become a television staple.

However, his role as an officer doesn’t end when the cameras stop rolling. Tom Selleck once admitted that real New York Police Department officers sometimes salute the now 76-year-old actor.

In February of 2017, Selleck sat down with CBS This Morning to discuss the honor and how he is respected within the community.

“Well, I hope to get salutes from cops,” laughed Selleck. “I do sometimes. The NYPD is set up in a very military kind of structure. They salute the Commissioner, even when he is a civilian employee. It’s a big thrill for me.”

With a hit show running for more than eleven seasons, it’s hard not to give respect where it is due. Selleck’s performance has been highly praised and criticized by many for his positive and just view of the legal system. A controversial topic right now in America.

More Of Tom Selleck and His Iconic Mustache

Similarly, Tom Selleck played a private investigator on a similar show, Magnum P.I. This lead was Selleck’s breakout role for seven seasons from 1980 until 1988.

The actor also explained that while these crime dramas draw resemblance to problems that are plaguing our cities today, that is not what the show is based off of. It is merely a “coincidence.”

“Issues come up that are generally police issues, but we don’t exploit them,” noted Selleck. “This show is very coincidental with the problems in Chicago. But we didn’t plan it that way. This show was thought of four months ago.”

Blood Blues typically airs on CBS every Friday night at 10 p.m. Make sure you don’t miss a second of Tom Selleck or the action.

However, not all of Tom Selleck’s roles carry so much weight. He is also well known for his role as Dr. Richard Burke in the comedy Friends, as Monica’s silver fox love interest.

Furthermore, IMDb notes that Selleck has appeared in more than fifty made-for-TV and general release movies, including Mr. Baseball in 1992, Quigley Down Under in 1990, Lassiter in 1984 and, Three Men and a Baby in 1987, which was the most profitable movie in 1987.
