Although it’s hard to see Tom Selleck as anything other than the New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan on “Blue Bloods,” he’s been in and out of a series of roles since the 1960s.

One of his most famous roles was as Peter Malloy in the 1997 comedy film “In & Out.” The movie is about a teacher from the midwest that begins to question his sexuality after a former student makes a comment about him at the Academy Awards.

Tom Selleck plays an entertainment reporter that shows up with all the other reporters to cover the story as it transpires. As all the others leave, Peter Malloy sticks around. He wants to wait for Howard (played by Kevin Kline) to get married to Emily (played by Joan Cusack).

The movie is known as being one of Hollywood’s first attempts at creating a movie centralized around coming out. Tom Selleck and Kevin Kline also share a 12-second iconic kiss together.

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Explains ‘In & Out’ Role

Tom Selleck has often ventured into comedy in the past. He was on the popular sitcom “Friends” for a while. He also starred in the movie “Three Men and a Baby” in the 1980s. So, what gravitated the “Blue Bloods” actor toward his iconic role in “In & Out?”

“I think my frustration was, I’m an actor, I’m a trained actor, and while leads are incredibly challenging I love the challenge of ensemble work … I don’t think you can do a movie just to prove something,” Selleck said in an interview with BUILD Series from 2017.

Tom Selleck isn’t always worried about being the lead in every project he’s in. Rather, being part of a stellar ensemble cast can be just as gratifying.

He opened up that to him, “a good part should scare you.” In many ways, “In & Out” provided him with new challenges.

“‘In & Out’ came along and was there a challenge? Did I want to play it because the character was gay? Frankly, no. I wanted to be … in an ensemble and if you know that movie and you see the ensemble, Frank Oz and Scott Rudin put together … that was just a fine group of actors,” Selleck said.

Tom Selleck on the ‘Friends’ Reunion

Recently, Tom Selleck has been reminiscing about his old roles once again.

He appeared on the recent “Friends: The Reunion” or “The One Where They Get Back Together” special on HBO Max. Several amazing guests appeared during the special, including Maggie Wheeler, Lady Gaga, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, David Beckham, and Kit Harington.

Tom Selleck also dropped by. He once played Dr. Richard Burke on the series and plays an older love interest of Monica Geller. TV Insider even ranked him as the No. 1 guest appearance during the reunion saying, “Selleck stuck around for a little chat, reminiscing about his experience with the show and its stars. And who doesn’t love on TV legend mingling with others?”

Selleck has more rare appearances in the comedy world, so coming back for the trivia game was a fun surprise. Although no one wanted to see Monica end up with him instead of Chandler, it was still nice to have him around.
